USMNT to face Canada in Gold Cup Quarterfinals

For the second-consecutive Concacaf tournament, the U.S. men’s national team will face off with its northern neighbors in the knockout round.

Canada will oppose with USMNT in the Gold Cup Quarterfinals, slated for July 9 at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. John Herdman’s squad finished group stage play as runners-up in Group D after a 4-2 victory over Cuba on Tuesday night.

Despite dropping points in earlier matches against Guadeloupe and Guatemala, the Canadians rebounded with a strong performance against the Cubans.

Junior Hoilett, Jonathan Osorio, Jayden Nelson, and Liam Millar all found the back of the net.

The USMNT topped Group A after earning back-to-back 6-0 victories over Saint Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad & Tobago. B.J. Callaghan’s squad opened group stage play with a 1-1 draw with Jamaica, using a late equalizer from Brandon Vazquez to earn one point.

The USMNT recently faced Canada in the Concacaf Nations League finals in June, earning a 2-0 victory after goals from Chris Richards and Folarin Balogun.

A return to the Gold Cup Final would give the USMNT an opportunity to earn a fourth tournament out of its past four tries in Concacaf play.

  1. Remember when Busio had all those big names monitoring him. “Monitoring” means little. When they start making offers we can be excited. Cowell would not walk in and play for any of those teams and in Italy and England there aren’t really reserve teams so he’d be sent on loan. If he went to Germany most reserve teams play in the U23 4th division, playing against other “kids” his age won’t help his technical development he’ll just keep relying on athleticism. He would likely be better off going to Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal where he could play first team for mid table team but actually control where he goes.

  2. Munich, Newcastle, AC Milan are the big names keeping tabs on Cade Cowell. He seems pretty grounded about the speculation stating what’s most important is getting professional minutes and starts. Don’t think anything will materialize for him until after the MLS season ends. Personally I think the most logical next step is the Eredivisie for him.

    • Also hearing RB Leipzig is hoping to loan out Caden Clark this season. Seems to be the forgotten talent at the moment in USMNT circles. I also think a loan to Eredivisie could do him good.

  3. re gressel, my beef wasn’t quality, it was age. i still am uncomfortable with that and i’ve listed a few other players including ream and seanjohn. but if he is being called he’s got 2A in about 110-120′ of work, and his assists are well-delivered as opposed to running into a defender then tapping it free. i have some concern on his foot speed or ability to stay goal side but he ain’t the only one with that issue, either.

and within the universe of this roster, which isn’t mine or his fault, cowell, djordje, ferreira, and when used gressel are the engine of the thing.

it’s this odd contradictory thing where people want to act like GB ball is some sort of great two way soccer. it’s usually fairly defensive, clunky. what this has badly needed is more precision wing service and a central creative element. i don’t know if he makes my personal A team but his impact is positive and he delivers the goods. he is an age risk and perhaps also vulnerable on defense. but not every player has to be some 90′ hard hat type. we have had awful deadball service for years. he could hit that. we could use someone off the bench who can feed dangerous balls accurately. he could try that. in the right situation where so what if we ship another goal, why not. not everyone should be picked like we’re trying to hustle around and preserve a 1-1 tie or whatever the guiding concept seems to be.

  4. The reality is, although this Canada team has looked poor so far…we really have little idea as to what we have with this USMNT squad. They steamrolled two shockingly disorganized teams. Great. But that proves little and that’s the standard we should be at at this stage.

Too many people assuming victory here. They should win, but this reeks of an ugly 1-0 kinda game which makes me nervous.

    • Canada will certainly put forth their best effort, but Guatemala who Canada drew 0-0 lost to Trinidad on June 11. The US group was no easier than Canada’s and the only win they got was against Cuba who were down to 15 field players.

This Canada group is mostly MLS backups. St. Clair is a good keeper and Laryea, Osorio, and Hoilett bring a lot of international experience but the US roster is much stronger. The US should win by 2 or 3 goals.

  5. Oh my, Jackson Yueill has been added to replace Sonora. I saw it coming when I looked at the list but didn’t want to speak it into existence. Pomykal, Acosta, and Tillman just back from injury.

  6. Over 82,000 people at the Rose Bowl for LAFC V LA Galaxy last night on Independence Day. That’s awesome! I guess people do care about watching their MLS teams play.
