Gio Reyna missed Borussia Dortmund’s summer tour due to injury and is also expected to miss the club’s competitive season opener this weekend.

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic confirmed Friday that Reyna remains sidelined due to a calf injury, which he suffered during Concacaf Nations League duty last June. The timetable for Reyna’s return to action remains unknown with Dortmund facing Schott Mainz in the first round of the German DFB Pokal this weekend.

“Julien Duranville and Thomas Meunier are definitely out,” Terzic said Friday. “The game is also coming too early for Gio [Reyna] and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. There is still a question mark for Karim and Nmecha. Kobel and Nico are fortunately available again.”

Reyna, 20, enjoyed a positive 2022-23 campaign with Dortmund, scoring seven league goals and adding four assists across all competitions. He also registered two assists against Canada in June’s Nations League Finals victory in Las Vegas.

In total, Reyna has earned 20 caps for the USMNT to date.

The Black and Yellow will host Cologne in their Bundesliga opener on August 19 at Signal Iduna Park.

Kevin Paredes expected to return ahead of Bundesliga opener

Kevin Paredes missed part of Wolfsburg’s preseason due to injury, but is expected to be back in training ahead of its Bundesliga opener.

Paredes is slated to return to Wolfsburg training next week, manager Niko Kovac confirmed Friday. The 20-year-old, who was nominated for the 2023-24 Golden Boy Award by Tuttosport, is heading into his third season abroad.

“Kevin Paredes is on the mend and will be back in training next week,” Kovac said Friday.

Paredes scored one goal and added three assists in 24 combined appearances for Wolfsburg last season. He featured in Bundesliga and DFB Pokal play, registering 525 minutes of action.

Paredes also featured for the U.S. Under-20 men’s national team at the recent U-20 World Cup. He’s made eight combined appearances for Mikey Varas’ squad, as well as featured for the Under-16’s in the past.

Wolfsburg visits Makkabi Berlin in German Cup play this weekend before hosting newly-promoted Heidenheim in its league opener on Aug. 19

  1. Rightfully going under the radar but US vs Mexico for the Concacaf U15 title Sunday 1:00 central. It might be on Concacaf’s YouTube channel or perhaps just on their website, couldn’t find confirmation of that. Led by Quinn Sullivan’s younger brother Cavan. Cavan is only 13.

  2. Spurs are serial losers. They are mediocre even if they can’t spell mediocre.

Of the teams listed, I would rather Balogun go to Inter and learn about winning. Maybe he could bring some of that to the USMNT who need to learn how to win.

  3. Race heating up for Balogun. Looks like Inter have pulled out and Monaco are leading the race. But now West Ham, Lens, and Tottenham are getting into the race. Arsenal about to have a bidding war for Balogun which is what they wanted.

  4. Why it’s important for the USMNT to have more creative CM’s/CAM’s available. Why it’s crucial to have Malik Tillman healthy and playing well at PSV. Have Brendan and Paxton Aaronson healthy and playing well. Gio seems to not have the ability stay healthy nor have quick recoveries from injury.

    • Depth has always been important for any team (club or country). All players experience injuries or dips in form. Without reliable “like for like” players the only option is to change formation and/or tactics…..which is something which was shown to be a deficiency of Gregg’s coaching.
The USMNT has always struggled with depth. Historically we’ve barely been able to produce a good starting XI… let alone back-ups that could realistically challenge the starters (with the exception of keepers). It’s only recently that our depth/back-ups are of a quality that there isn’t a significant drop-off of play and we even have a couple situations where the starter can’t easily be selected.
Balogun Vs. Pepi, Dest Vs. Scally, McKennie Vs. Musah (if Reyna is played centrally). We’re not to the point where we’ve got a real competition at each position, but we are getting closer to having a reliable back-up at each position.
This is what has most fans excited about this generation of the USMNT.

    • Agree Gio doesn’t seem to heal fast and as well seems to always pick up leg and groin injuries. Have no idea why whether it’s not enough stretching, hydration or resistance training or perhaps a combo. So much talent but honestly you can’t rely on him as he misses to much time

Mr69, neither does his club or country or anyone. If they did they would fix it.

      • We really don’t know what Gio’s most recent injury was. Footage of the tackle wasn’t clear and reports were very general. Was it a ligament injury, a muscle injury, or possibly a bone. Was it to the ankle or knee?
His previous injury was his hamstring….which is a notoriously fickle injury that is easily tweaked/re-injured if you try rush back to playing before fully healed.
I’m hopeful that BvB are just being cautious with Gio…giving him extra time… to insure that he’s fully healed. It’s going to be a long season for BvB after the sale of some key players and the disappointment of letting the title slip through their fingers. So giving Gio a couple extra weeks at the start of the season may help them in the long run.
