Gio Reyna ruled out of Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga opener

Gio Reyna won’t play a part in Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga opener this weekend.

Dortmund manager Edin Terzic ruled Reyna out of Saturday’s league opener against Cologne due to a lingering calf injury he suffered in June. The 20-year-old missed Dortmund’s 6-1 German Cup victory over Schott Mainz last weekend and the timetable for his return remains unknown.

“[Julien] Duranville, Reyna and [Thomas] Meunier are definitely out,” Terzic said. “There are question marks with Felix Nmecha and Karim Adeyemi, but there we are confident that it could work out for Saturday.”

Reyna enjoyed a positive 2022-23 campaign with Dortmund, scoring seven league goals and adding four assists across all competitions. He also registered two assists against Canada in June’s Nations League Finals victory in Las Vegas before being substituted off due to his injury.

In total, Reyna has earned 20 caps for the USMNT to date, winning the Nations League on two occasions.

The Black and Yellow finished second in the Bundesliga last season behind eventual winners Bayern Munich. A 2-2 draw with Mainz wasn’t enough for Dortmund despite Reyna’s two-assist performance off the bench.

  1. The most interesting thing about Gio is he is 20.

Look at the latest pictures of him.

Look at pictures of him in his first year up and his first few caps for the USMNT.

His body appears to be radically changed. Hopefully this means that once he “grows” into his body maybe the wave of injuries will lessen.

  2. the flaw in a lot of the bleak o’brien apocalyptica on here is unlike o’brien, holden, or perhaps adams it hasn’t been one thing over and over, it’s been a migrating series. that sounds to me like a player with fitness issues as opposed to a career ending health issue. this isn’t you were always battling the knee and it finally got too bad to play on. this isn’t someone slides into your knee and cuts it open and you have a mix of infection and repair issues, and you literally fall over untouched in a game and are done. what i see is he sits out long periods, he starts to get well, he yanks some new muscle area. this is what usually messes up older players. IMO you have to get past a decently high fitness threshold to be safe from basic muscle pull risk playing high intensity pro sport as an adult. until you get game fit this is what can happen. to me this is what happens when one listens to lowball doctor estimates on return from a muscle pull and doesn’t get fully pro soccer player fit before game action.

i am more concerned if it’s “oh it’s the back/knee, etc. again.” that’s the damaged goods scenario. i am more concerned with adams on that.

  3. You all are going to be mad, but my theory is Gio gets cold feet and over exaggerates his injuries to take a break from playing.

  4. According to transfermkt games missed for US and club due to injury
    Adams
    23/24: 4
    22/23: 28
    21/22: 4
    20/21: 6
    19/20: 15
    18/19: 24
    ——————
    Reyna
    23/24: 2
    22/23: 6
    21/22: 43
    20/21: 2
    ——————
    Pulisic
    23/24: 0
    22/23: 9 (not injured 51/60 85%)
    21/22: 15
    20/21: 15
    19/20: 17
    18/19: 15
I used transfermarkt’s games missed stat. I can be a little off, like it counted USA vs Serbia as Pulisic missing do to injury but he wouldn’t have came anyway. I adjusted CP’s 22/23 total for that but didn’t go through the rest, so it might be off a game or two for each player.
-Pulisic has missed approximately 1/4 of 4 of last 5 seasons.
-Adams has missed 1/4 to 1/2 of 3 of his last 6 and will be approaching 1/4 of this season if he isn’t expected back until after Sept window at the earliest.

  5. What’s making me nervous about Gio specifically is the USMNT history of players being injured to the point where they weren’t able.to reach their full potential. Those names of the past include John O’Brien, Stu Holden, Josh Gatt, Jonathon Amon, Gooch Onyewu(to some extent), Im sure I’m missing a few others and we may have to throw Daryl Dike into that equation. Gio is still young enough where he could overcome these injury issues, but it’s frustrating as a US fan for sure

    • The difference would seem to be all of those were either bone or ligament issues (mostly knees). As far as we know Gio has been muscular. Maybe Jozy is a better comparison where you might still have months of success followed by months of recovery.

    • I think the difference now is quality depth is building at AM: M. Tillman, P. Aaronson, B. Aaronson, Diego Luna. And I would hazard to guess we see C. Pulisic at CAM quite a bit for AC Milan this season. But I really hope Reyna stays healthy this season.

I also have a feeling Berhalter may look for a different primary formation this cycle. If you look at the depth for attack this cycle our player pool fits more of a 4-3-2-1 or 3-5-2 formations. I kind of want to see a 4-3-2-1. With Weah and Jedi providing the width and Pulisic and another AM working underneath the striker. And you can still keep that MMA 3 man midfield.

      • Luna, Tillman, and Pax have shown nothing that says their ready to step in for the first team. They are all promising but if you put them out there today they’d look a lot like the GC attacking MF. Maybe they’ll be there by next summer but that’s a big jump.

The roster is basically the same, that Gregg steadfastly ran out in a 4-3-3 almost everytime why would he suddenly realize oh this group could be a 3-5-2?

      • Didn’t say they are ready. But regardless if injuries continue to happen they will be thrown in. That’s the realization. In Tillmans case he has shown much more than others. All of our young players have been thrown in the fray the past 4 years. I think a head. This isn’t about today this about three years from now. Even Paredes could get into that AM conversation the next few years.

Because I think Greg understands and has the football intelligence to realize that he will have to adapt more to his player pool this cycle.

This team does not have true wingers. There isn’t many true wingers in the youth ranks either. Most play more like AM’s. Pulisic has even stated that he is most effective as more a CAM/ second forward playing off of a main striker. Not on the wing. His best season in club ball was playing more off of Giroud. Why Pioli has been vocal about Pulisic playing as a CAM.

      • 2tone I appreciate your positivity. I don’t agree with one sentence of that but I do appreciate that you bring a different side to the usual grumpiness here.

    • “the USMNT history of players being injured to the point where they weren’t able.to reach their full potential.”

Most players don’t reach their full potential whether because of injury or other reasons.

In addition, since the days of Freddy Adu and Eddie Gavin, USMNT fans tend to quickly confuse a player’s potential with his actual level of achievement. Players like Gale Agbossomunde come to mind.

For me Gio is the best of the lot and many here were willing to cut him loose not that long ago. He needs to stay in touch with his buddies Erling and Jude to remind himself of what he might be able to achieve some day.

  6. Looks like Monaco has walked away from trying to sign Balogun. That makes two teams walking away Inter now Monaco.

Fulham is looking to sign him now. Arsenal still holding strong on valuation. He may have to take another loan this season.

    • Most of our current USMNT players have been fragile. Adams, McKennie, Musah, Dest, Weah, Reyna, Pulisic, M. Robinson, Sargent, Dike etc…. have had significant injuries. It’s part of the game. That’s what happens when there are so many games.

      • Well it’s been true up.to this point, and I dont know how anyone can say any different. Gio has missed almost 2 years in a row of consistent play bc of injuries, and Pulisic had to leave Chelsea because he was consistently injured to the point where he wasn’t thought of as reliable enough to play consistently for fear of him getting injured.

      • Striker: if they changed “fragile” to “often injured” would it change your opinion. If you look at the games missed above, that’s a lot of games missed. Those are just the injuries not coaches decision or card accumulation? I don’t think anyone is judging their character and saying they don’t have toughness, just that they’ve missed a lot. You mentioned CCV he’s missed 30 matches since 2016, that’s far fewer than Adams, Pulisic, or Reyna (now a good portion of that he wasn’t a part of the NT so you could probably add some games he wouldn’t have been able to play but his injury numbers are pretty low).
