Johnny Cardoso and Atletico Madrid are headed to the Copa Del Rey quarterfinals after the American midfielder delivered one of his better performances in some time.
Cardoso logged his first 90-minute shift since May 2025 as Diego Simeone’s men edged Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 on Tuesday. The American midfielder was all over the place in the result, coming close to earning Man of the Match honors.
Cardoso completed 95% of his passes and led all players in duels won (10) and tackles completed (7). He also made four defensive recoveries and drew one foul, making just his sixth start in all competitions this season.
The 24-year-old will now aim to retain his starting spot as Atletico Madrid hosts Deportivo Alaves in La Liga action on Sunday.
In France, Lily Yohannes scored in Lyon’s league victory over Lens. Tim Weah and Marseille rolled to a Round of 16 berth in the Coupe De France.
In Germany, Joe Scally and Borussia Moenchengladbach suffered a lopsided loss at Hoffenheim. James Sands went the distance in St. Pauli’s road loss to Wolfsburg. Kevin Paredes made his second-straight came off of the bench.
Elsewhere, Sergino Dest and PSV advanced in the KNVB Cup. Danny Leyva and Necaxa lost at home to Monterrey. Lynden Gooch featured in Huddersfield Town’s home win over Rotherham United in EFL Trophy action.

Richie Ledezma and Brian Gutierrez switched to Mexico, and called up for their upcoming friendlies for Mex against Bolivia cant remeber other team Mex playing. They no longer are Yanks abroad Richie and Brian! 😱😢
Because this is non-FIFA date apparently they are still US eligible and have not filed their switches. All indications are that they will in the near future though unless Mexico royally messes up this camp. (That’s according to the ESPN article I read anyway). Honestly neither are anywhere close to making the US roster.
Oh I see, thanks for that JR. I figured it was a non fifa international break. Since most teams dont have anything scheduled now, with acception to African cup of nations which ends tomorrow.
Griffin Yow on his way to New England.
Looks like Reyna is back to riding the pine. Hopefully he can work his way out of that.
came here to point out the same thing, and tbh, this just might be his career going forward where he gets starts here and there but is not a consistent starter. That may prove to mean nothing when it comes to the USMNT if keeps impacting games when he’s given chances. Thoughts?
