Tyler Adams did return to field training on Thursday for his new club AFC Bournemouth but isn’t expected to feature in competitive action anytime soon.
Adams joined Bournemouth last week from Leeds United, ending a one-season spell at Elland Road for the Yorkshire club. However, the U.S. men’s national team midfielder remains sidelined due to a hamstring injury which forced him to miss the final few months of the 2022-23 English Premier League campaign.
Adams was seen working with his new teammates at Bournemouth’s training ground on Thursday which is a positive sign after a long time away from action. Cherries boss Andoni Iraola isn’t planning to have Adams though, with no official timetable determined for his club debut.
“They both need time,” Iraola said about Adams and fellow acquisition Alex Scott. “The club signed the players knowing they will be out for some games, I think Tyler should be earlier than Alex.
“Alex will spend more time out, neither of them are close to playing.”
Adams made 26 combined appearances for Leeds United last season under Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia following his transfer from RB Leipzig last summer. He finished the campaign as one of the Lilywhites’ top performers despite missing the final two months of the season through injury.
His arrival at Bournemouth should help fill the gap left by Jefferson Lerma’s move to Crystal Palace.
The Cherries face off with Tottenham on Saturday in their final match of the August schedule.
JR,
I’m waiting for Tyler to be declared out for the season. or at least for the first half.
Said today he hopes to play in a club friendly over the international break and make his debut late September.
Sports medicine doc here. Operative hamstring injuries are very rare. I have no knowledge about what part of the muscle/tendon he injured, or what exactly he had done, but as soon as I heard surgery, I thought uh oh. I hope I’m wrong and this doesn’t impact the rest of his career…
Non medical person here. His career has already been significantly impacted by his injury history.
If he were less injury prone you have thought that he would have had more interest than this last minute “damaged goods” bid from Bournemouth.
I didn’t see surgery mentioned for this particular go around with Tyler.
Here is Tyler’s injury history. As a Sports doctor maybe you can give us some insight. I can’t get it to transfer well but it should be enough to point you in the right direction.
The link is included so you can check and see if anyone is lying about it.

Thanks for the link. Yeah, he’s had a few injuries for sure. Not a great track record for your work horse/captain…. This one is clearly the most serious, though.
He, Reyna, and Pulisic all seem prone to muscle injuries. I’d love to know what their individual “other” work with their trainers/physios looks like.
Just a general piece of advice I give patients: injured muscles want to heal short. Work to add strength at full muscle length during recovery. Light weight eccentric work can be very effective and preventative.
Stories about him having what was described as “non-invasive” surgery appeared around March 28, with some hope he’d be available by the end of EPL or at least Nations League. After missing those dates he was expected back to start the season. July 23 reports began to circulate that he’d suffered a setback and wouldn’t be back until after the September window at the earliest.
