Mark McKenzie’s equalizer helps Genk earn Conference League tie vs. Fiorentina

Belgian side Genk fought its way back to earn one point in its UEFA Europa Conference League group stage opener against Fiorentina with American defender Mark McKenzie playing a vital role in the final scoreline.

McKenzie’s 85th minute equalizer helped Genk claim a 2-2 draw vs. the Serie A side on Matchday 1 of the group stage. Luca Ranieri scored twice for the visitors, cancelling out Andi Zeqiri’s tying goal in the first half.

With Fiorentina leading 2-1 late in the match, McKenzie rose to the occasion in the 85th minute. The U.S. men’s national team defender headed home Bilal El Khannous’ cross for his first goal of the season and his first overall since May 21.
