With the international break upon us, top European leagues pause as players return to their national teams for a short stint of qualifiers and friendlies around the globe.
The U.S. men’s national team steals the headlining match as Uzbekistan visits CITYPARK for a friendly against the Americans. USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter takes the reigns for a second-consecutive cycle after an extensive search led the USSF back to the former defender.
Berhalter’s 24-player roster is headlined by Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Folarin Balogun for the pair of matches, which also features a showdown with Oman on Sept. 12. First-time callups were also given to Inter Miami’s Benjamin Cremaschi and Palermo’s Kristoffer Lund, who join several veteran players in the squad.
Major League Soccer regular season action also continues this weekend as Inter Miami hosts Sporting Kansas City in hopes of keeping its playoff hopes alive. Despite the Herons 11-match unbeaten run in all competitions, Tata Martino’s squad sits 13th in the Eastern Conference with 25 points.
Lionel Messi and Co. registered three points in league play following a successful trip to BMO Stadium last week. The Herons defeated LAFC 3-1 for their second league victory over two weeks.
International football continues with Uruguay and Chile kicking off their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign this weekend. Uruguay is unbeaten in its last four meetings with Chile, last suffering a head-to-head loss in November 2016.
Friendly play also takes place in Europe where Germany faces Japan on Saturday. Japan defeated the Germans 2-1 in World Cup play last fall and will be seeking a second-straight victory.
The 2023-24 Concacaf Nations League kicks off this weekend as well with Jamaica and Honduras taking the last spot on SBI’s top five list. The Reggae Boyz went unbeaten through the group stage in last year’s edition of the tournament and will look to start their campaign in similar fashion.
Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey and Everton forward Demarai Gray lead Jamaica’s front line while veteran Andre Blake captains his nation once again. The Reggae Boyz are unbeaten in their last five matches against Honduras, winning their last match 2-1 in Kingston.
