Reggie Cannon’s QPR debut won’t come on Wednesday night at Leeds United, but manager Gareth Ainsworth is expecting to have his new fullback in due time.
Cannon is continuing his preparation in London after signing with the English second-tier club in September. The veteran defender last appeared for Portuguese club Boavista in May before leaving the club after reported unpaid wages.
After a lengthy summer of speculation, Cannon is now a QPR player and Ainsworth is ready to see what he can bring to the squad.
“Fitness-wise and sharpness-wise he is a little bit rusty,” Ainsworth said Tuesday in his pre-match press conference. “But he’s a cracking lad, he is really humble and happy.
“He is training well and I don’t think it will be long before we see Reggie out there,” he added.
Cannon, 25, logged 89 combined appearances in Portugal over the last three seasons, featuring heavily in the backline. After originally moving to Europe as a right back, Cannon’s role expanded to a third centerback at times last season, a role which could also be used in the English Football League Championship.
There is no timetable for Cannon’s official QPR debut, but October 7 is his final opportunity to feature before the international break. QPR travels to Elland Road on Wednesday before hosting Blackburn Rovers at Loftus Road on Saturday.
No mention of his eligibility so hopefully that was just a throw away line on the press release.
