Orlando City edges Nashville SC to reach Eastern Conference semifinals

Orlando City’s second-consecutive shutout victory of the 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs on Tuesday proved to be enough to advance them into the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Ivan Angulo’s lone goal in the sixth minute at Geodis Park proved to be enough as the Lions eliminated Nashville SC 1-0. Pedro Gallese registered a four-save clean sheet, which was his second overall shutout of the playoffs.

Angulo’s right-footed finish in the sixth minute boosted the Lions in front for a lead they would not relinquish on the road. The Lions forced an error inside Nashville’s side of the field before Angulo’s looping right-footed finish landed into the back of the net.

Angulo and Nashville’s Daniel Lovitz traded shot opportunities later in the half, but both Gallese and Joe Willis were up to the task as the teams went into the interval at 1-0.

Nashville SC upped its offensive pressure after halftime with Alex Muyl and Lukas MacNaughton both creating opportunities for themselves. Gallese denied both players, keeping Orlando City in front.

The Peruvian international’s best save came in the 69th minute when he dove to his left to repel Jacob Shaffelburg’s low drive. Shaffelburg created enough room for a powerful shot, which Gallese kept from finding the bottom-right corner.

Orlando City’s defense would stand firm as the Lions advanced to the final four of the Eastern Conference. Either Atlanta United or the Columbus Crew will oppose Oscar Pareja’s men in the semifinals after being forced into a Game 3 for this upcoming weekend.
