Sporting KC’s playoff run continues with St. Louis CITY SC elimination

Sporting Kansas City remained unbeaten in the 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs after eliminating No. 1 seed St. Louis CITY SC on Sunday night at Children’s Mercy Park.

Logan Ndenbe and Daniel Salloi both scored for Peter Vermes’ squad in a 2-1 victory over the expansion visitors. The result not only advanced SKC into the Western Conference semifinals, but also eliminated Bradley Carnell’s men after only two matches in the postseason.

SKC knocked on the door early with both Johnny Russell and Alan Pulido being denied opening goals by Roman Burki. However, the Western Conference club would receive a breakthrough goal from Ndenbe before the halftime whistle.

Pulido’s pass allowed Ndenbe to stroke a right-footed shot into the bottom-right corner for a 1-0 SKC lead.

Joao Klauss was denied by Tim Melia in the 58th minute as St. Louis CITY SC tried to fight back and tie things up.

SKC would capture a two-goal lead as Daniel Salloi slotted home from a fast break in the 73rd minute. Gadi Kinda’s pass allowed the Hungarian to race towards goal before finishing nicely inside of the St. Louis box.

Celio Pompeu’s long-range missile in the 86th minute cut the St. Louis deficit in half, but it was the closest that the visitors would get to a comeback.

SKC held on for a second-straight victory over their newest rivals, advancing into the final four of the Western Conference.

St. Louis CITY SC’s debut MLS campaign comes to a painful ending despite enjoying a stellar regular season in 2023.
