Club America’s dominant run this fall concluded on Sunday with an Apertura title lift.

Alex Zendejas and Club America defeated Tigres 3-0 in second-leg action on Sunday night to become league champions. After the two Liga MX giants played out a 1-1 first leg draw last Thursday, Club America used three extra time goals to clinch a 14th Liga MX title in club history.

Zendejas, who delivered a strong campaign for Club America, logged 73 minutes from the start of the match before watching the extra time period from the sidelines.

After both teams played a goal-less 90 minutes, Club America eventually broke through and cruised to a home victory. Julian Quinones’ finish proved to be the deciding goal on aggregate before Richard Sanchez and Jonathan Rodriguez also added insurance goals of their own later in extra time.

Tigres’ frustrating night saw three players sent off from the 80th minute on, including starting goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman.

The 25-year-old Zendejas finished the Apertura campaign with five goals and three assists in 21 appearances. It marked the second time in Zendejas’ club career that he lifted a Mexican league title (2017 Clausura with Chivas).

Club America’s Apertura title success has clinched them a berth into the 2024 Campeones Cup, where they will meet the Clausura winners.
