Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Balogun, Trusty, and more

Folarin Balogun did not end up on the scoresheet in Saturday’s trip to Rennes, but the U.S. men’s national team striker did have an impactful performance for the club.

Balogun registered two assists in Monaco’s 2-1 road victory, moving the Ligue 1 side up to third place in the league table. Balogun connected with Anderson in the 51st minute for a 1-0 Monaco lead before the 22-year-old also set up Youssouf Fofana with five minutes left to play. Despite a late consolation goal from Rennes, Monaco would hang on for a second-straight league triumph.

Balogun created the most chances in the match (4) and also made four recoveries, continuing to play a vital role in his first full season for Monaco. Monaco’s next Ligue 1 showdown comes on Dec. 15 against Lyon before a final match of the year on Dec. 20 against Toulouse.

In England, Auston Trusty and Sheffield United earned a crucial win over Brentford. Antonee Robinson and Fulham routed West Ham United.

In Italy, Weston McKennie and Juventus continued their strong Serie A season with a win over reigning champions Napoli.

In Germany, Brenden Aaronson and Union Berlin defeated Joe Scally and Borussia Moenchengladbach. Gio Reyna featured for Borussia Dortmund, but the Black and Yellow lost at home to RB Leipzig.

  1. I have only watched the highlights of the AC Milan match. Pulisic had an assist, but could be considered partially at fault for the winning goal. He tried to dribble out of trouble near the top of his team’s box, got dispossessed, and the opponent scored the winning goal.

  2. Forgot 18 year old Fletcher is on loan to Sawnsea. Going to be a big part of the next u20 cycle.

Griffin Yow making a push for Olympic team inclusion.

Overall a pretty good weekend for a lot of Americans abroad.

    • No update for you as to why. MW Ref. What I do know is Ream isn’t athletic as Adarabioyo or Bassey. Ream isn’t a good one on one defender as the fan base wants and he never has been. Jedi makes Reams job an extremely easy one for Club & country. Ream has been exposed in Fulhams last 3 matches he’s played. Jedi has had to guard multiple players while Ream has been an empty jersey. Bassey makes poor decisions, which contributes to Bassey’s inconsistency. As soon as Bassey tightens his game up, Ream becomes expendable. Ream is at the lower end of the athletic scale, which is why he has been a 3rd or 4th CB when Fulham is in the EPL. His change of direction, & foot speed have never been on par with his elite positioning and processing of the game. Jedi becomes his LB and Ream is a starter and has played more minutes and matches in the EPL than any time in his career. This is not a coincidence!! (Fulham has been on TV, 3 out of their last 4 matches, so no surprise to me that Fulham scores a bunch and has a clean sheet v the Hammers w/ Ream not playing).

  3. Chris Richards playing as a DM for Palace. Good to see him getting minutes and starts regardless of his position.

Also Trusty playing as both a LCB in a 3 man backline and LB in 4 man backline for Sheffield.

Expect to see both in March for the Nations league.

Good weekend for attackers with Balogun getting assists and Pulisic getting assist.

Robinson continuing to play really well for Fulham.

Tillman, Pepi, and Dest continue their surge for PSV. Only a matter of time Pepi garners starts for PSV. Lukk De Jong will need rest.
