I watched the extended highlights of Forrest vs Man U and the commentators can’t stop talking about how poor Turner has been playing with the ball at his feet and it cost his team a goal. Ugh. Keeper used to be one of our strongest positions, and now it’s one of our weakest.
Only caught part of the game, and it sounded like Turner’s pass out of the back led to turnover that led to Man U’s goal. But that said, he came up with some great saves at the end of the game to get Forest the win. Man U was pushing hard, and Matt made all the routine saves, came out to get the ball on multiple corners, and had one highlight reflex save to push a ball over the crossbar after a hard shot deflected off one of his defenders. After beating Man U I couldn’t imagine Forest not sticking with Matt as the starter now. He is the clear #1 for USMNT to start 2024.
Nuno came out and “took responsibility” for Matt’s screw up.
In the end they won after Matt made another great save and Nuno is trying to build a new team unity so they will be big on picking each other up.
Nuno was also a keeper so he “gets it” and it looks like he’s going to stick with Matt for the foreseeable future.
But there are limits. Matt is going to have to clean up his act. He’s made some pretty bonehead mistakes and is starting only because the backup sucks more.
Right now, none of their keepers are going to be back next season unless some hot shot is available in January , in which case that new guy will take over.
His status as USMNT is not in question.
His USMNT competition is even more pathetic than what it is in Forest. And, until we get to Copa America, we aren’t playing any teams worth a damn.
I saw the play where Turner’s pass out of goal led to the turnover that resulted in a goal for Man U.. It was hardly a gross mistake. He was passing to a teammate, likely a CB, after a Man U attack had been stopped. The CB was in the middle of the pitch about 20 yards out and Turner passed right to him at a good pace (not a lazy pass). When watching the replay behind the goal, no Man U players seemed close, but one of their players at the edge of the box was able to get over fast enough to make a sliding tackle and knock the ball away from the Forest CB and Man U was able to get to the loose ball faster and then turned it into a goal since the Forest players had turned to go up field. There was nothing wrong with Turner’s pass, it was just that he shouldn’t have made it. I’ve seen this before where a team is so focused on playing out of the back that they force it when they should just kick the ball long in order to get it to safety. Also, it looked to me like the Forest manager was focused on scoring more than defending, perhaps because they were playing at home. As it turned out, that worked out. But, several times Forest got into trouble because they would send player forward as soon as they could and a couple of times turnovers just past midfield would lead to attacks where Forest didn’t have enough defenders back. Forest was lucky they didn’t give up more goals. The reaction save by Turner near the end was outstanding.
Gary,
“There was nothing wrong with Turner’s pass, it was just that he shouldn’t have made it.”
That was Nuno’s point and it’s why he “took responsibility”.
Matt was being aggressive in trying to do what Nuno wanted.
Matt has made aggressive distribution errors before. But if you’re going to do that then you better understand the risks you are taking.
“Cautious” works better with keepers than “bold”.
Especially newbie keepers.
If a guy like Courtois or Keylor tried the same thing everyone would forgive them because they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt.
Matt hasn’t been there long enough yet to earn that and he’s lucky that Nuno is willing to cover for him.
Hopefully they go on a run and avoid relegation and that Matt wins everyone over.
But make no mistake, right now Matt and the other Forest keepers are all on their way out of there if things don’t get much better right away.
I don’t think Turners competition is pathetic just untried. Slonina, Brady, Schulte, Celentano are all young and just starting their careers.
Right now it’s Turner then Slonina and then pick any of the others as the 3rd choice.
All of those young Keepers have really big potential. Right now I would put Schulte as the third Keeper due to him actually having won a Championship.
Slonina may need a permanent trnasfer away from Chelsea. Chelsea is seeking another GK.
Slonina is a project for Chelsea. They know he’s nowhere near ready for EPL so they purchased him for a relatively low amount and will loan him out over the next few seasons to clubs (who will pay at least part of Gaga’s salary). If Gaga hits then they’ll bring him in, if he doesn’t they won’t have lost much money relative to their overall budget. Chelsea is generally really good at monitoring their loanees and bring them in for training between loans. Miazga often talked about how much contact he had with the Chelsea training staff.
“I don’t think Turners competition is pathetic just untried.”
Pathetic means that if Matt goes down in the near future (Nations League , Copa America) you all will be very nervous about who replaces him.
If Matt goes down, Gregg will go with Horvath.
“All of those young Keepers have really big potential.”
Potential means you haven’t done it yet.
And that maybe you never will.
…and have no way of knowing how good/okay/meh Gaga is right now. He’s clearly on the wrong end of the shooting gallery with his current team.
