Antonee Robinson, Fulham suffer EFL Cup semifinal exit

Fulham’s wait to reach a first-ever EFL Cup Final will unfortunately continue.

The Cottagers suffered semifinal elimination on Wednesday despite tying Liverpool 1-1 in second-leg action at Craven Cottage. Antonee Robinson started and played 90 minutes for Marco Silva’s squad, but the Reds advanced to February’s final after winning 3-2 on aggregate.

Luis Diaz’s first-half goal proved to be the decider despite an improved second half by the Cottagers. Bernd Leno’s error allowed Diaz to boost Jurgen Klopp’s squad in front after only 11 minutes.

Fulham improved after halftime and almost drew level sooner through Andreas Pereira’s low shot which struck the post. Issa Diop’s tying goal came with 13 minutes to play, but it would be the closest that Fulham got to forcing extra time between the two sides.

Robinson logged his latest 90 minutes at left back for the Cottagers, winning six of his 10 duels, making six recoveries, and five clearances. Fellow USMNT defender Tim Ream served as an unused substitute on the night.

After failing to win its last three matches in all competitions, Fulham will now turn its attention towards FA Cup fourth round action this Saturday. Newcastle United makes the trip to London on Saturday before the Cottagers close January’s schedule with a home league match vs. Everton.
