Cade Cowell has become the latest American talent to make the move to Liga MX this winter.
Cowell has joined Chivas de Guadalajara on a permanent deal from the San Jose Earthquakes, both clubs announced. The 20-year-old signed a homegrown contract with San Jose in January 2019 and played for the first team over the past five seasons.
“We want to thank Cade for everything he has given to the San Jose Earthquakes,” said Quakes general manager Chris Leitch, “To be able to witness firsthand his exponential growth and development as a player and person both on and off the field over the years has been an absolute joy. He’s made an indelible impression on the club and we wish him and his family nothing but success in his next chapter.”
Cowell scored 10 goals and tallied 15 assists in 104 appearances for the Earthquakes. He was named to the 2021 MLS All-Star Team and also set several club records during his time in San Jose.
Internationally, Cowell has earned eight caps for the U.S. men’s national team, scoring one goal. He also was a key part of the USMNT U-20’s run at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2023, leading the team with three goals.
He joins fellow USMNT teammate Brandon Vazquez as the latest MLS product to move to Liga MX.
Chivas de Guadalajara suffered quarterfinal elimination during the Liga MX Apertura season last year. They recently began their Clausura schedule with a 1-1 league draw with Santos Laguna.

I hope this works out for him. His athleticism will make him stand out in Mexico. Can only hope this move helps with his technique and becoming more unpredictable in attack.
I hope this works out for Cade, as well, but in either case, it is unlikely to help with his technique. Since Cade came on the scene, he has shown to be more athletic than technical.
Liga MX is very technical and for the most part, the pace of play is slower, Additionally, international games have shown that technique is not Cade’s strong point…Liga MX will do the same. The flip side of that is, Cade’s athleticism will be something that he can leverage in Liga MX.
He also recently left USMNT camp. This may be just for Chivas, but El Tri have pursued his younger brother, Chance, and I imagine they’ll pursue him as well – particularly now that he’s playing in Liga MX.
