Cavan Sullivan winner propels USMNT U-17’s to opening night World Cup victory

The U.S. Under-17 men’s national team began its World Cup schedule in winning fashion on Wednesday.

Cavan Sullivan played the hero for Gonzalo Segares’ squad, scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 group stage triumph over Burkina Faso. The Philadelphia Union homegrown came off the bench and delivered the vital moment for the Americans with 11 minutes to play in Ar-Rayyan, Qatar.

Mathis Albert’s dangerous cross from the left wing snuck past a Burkina Faso defender and fell to Sullivan in the box. Sullivan’s toe-poke finish snuck into the back of the net, giving the USMNT U-17’s a late advantage.

USMNT U-17 goalkeeper Aidan Stokes registered a four-save clean sheet.

A total of 16 players earned minutes in the match as the Americans moved to second place in Group I.

The Americans will aim to make it two wins out of two when they face Tajikistan on Saturday.

  1. Definitely best player on the pitch. Just on a different level with his intelligence, movement, passing, and ability to take multiple players on.

But Berchimas and Albert were left on islands to many times. Needed more involvement from both outside backs in attack.
