Edin Terzic plays down Gio Reyna’s January departure

Gio Reyna may be on the radar of several European clubs, but Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic isn’t expecting to lose the 21-year-old by month’s end on Thursday.

Reyna remains a hot commodity ahead of the closure of the January Transfer Window this week. The U.S. men’s national team attacker has been linked with a potential loan move away from Signal Iduna Park, with Marseille, Nottingham Forest, Sevilla, and several other European clubs interested in his services.

However, Reyna did deliver a positive 24-minute cameo on Sunday as the Black and Yellow defeated Bochum 3-1 in Bundesliga play, opening the door to a potential stay in Dortmund for the remainder of the season.

Whether or not Reyna will remain a Dortmund player come February 1 remains to be seen, but Terzic expects him to be part of Friday’s trip to Heidenheim.

“Gio is a fantastic player. Of course he’s not happy when he’s not playing,” Terzic said postmatch via DAZN. “You could see that Gio is capable of influencing the game from the bench. He was very confident on the ball, managed to create a few dangerous situations, but was a bit unlucky with his finishing in one or two situations.

“I expect him to be available to me on Friday,” the veteran manager added. “I haven’t heard anything else. Gio is under contract, Gio is our player and did well when he came on today.”

Reyna has started just one of his 11 league appearances this season, logging 341 minutes in Borussia Dortmund’s domestic campaign.

  1. Given the options, Nottingham Forest likely offered the most financial incentives and won the loan bid. Like McKennie previously with Leeds, this is probably the club pulling in reinforcements to avoid relegation. We’ll see what happens when the loan period expires.

Terzic felt Gio was a liability on defense. Regardless, it was time for a break from Dortmond.

  2. Gio is on his way to England to go through medical tests. If there are no issues with the medical, Gio will be on loan with Nottingham Forest for the rest of this season. As of right now, no word on an option to buy, so for the moment, a stand alone loan deal.

  4. I hate these political Will they/wont they showmanship games. Either the kid is a good player and has ability to contribute to the squad OR he’s not ready yet. The amount of minutes that he gets from this manager says this manager does not believe he is ready yet.

If that truly is the case, let him go on loan and get ready. if he has a future with the club, bring them back for preseason training and layout clearly a plan for his development. If he doesn’t have a path forward with the club, either sell him outright or send them out on loan with an option to buy.

    This isn’t hard.

    • Terzic started him 2/3 of the time in his first run in 20/21 and played in all but 4 of over 30 opportunities (two illness or injury, 2 managers decision in cup play). Gio’s value according to Transfermarkt during Terzic’s first run was 42 million, it’s now 20 million. Gio saw his most minutes with Terzic as an interim manager. Whether it’s injuries since or attitude, the manager or management has drastically changed his attitude towards Gio. A stark contrast to everytime the Juve management threatens selling Wes, Allegri just plays him more until management realizes how important he is.

It’s both, but more of the former, than the latter, but the latter is definitely not helping the situation. That said, Gio’s attitude was better in the last game vs Bolchum.

Also, the Sporting Department likes Gio and would prefer to “rehabilitate him” at Dortmund instead of doing so via a loan or transfer. They recognize the potential value in “rehabbing” him at Dortmund, getting his transfer value up, and then cashing in on the sale, versus him transferring now, and another team cashing in on their “asset” in 2 – 3 years.

      • JR,

“A stark contrast to everytime the Juve management threatens selling Wes,, Allegri just plays him more until management realizes how important he is.”

As you say, it is a contrasting situation.

Juve have no one else who on the roster quite like Weston. So, when he starts doing what he does so well, he becomes irreplaceable. Not to mention that during the times when Juve did want to sell him, they weren’t going to get much for a Leeds reject. Allegri is no idiot. Giving Weston a chance to play his way on or off the team was, if intentional, genius and financially sound.

        Gio’s situation is more complicated
        1. Gio has far more direct competition at BVB, Brand, Reus, now Sancho, etc., etc.
        2. Yet, Gio has so much production given his limited time that he also is a bit irreplaceable. BVB does not do so well last season without Gio’s scoring productivity. You can look up how important his goals were. In other words, Gio doesn’t seem to need as much PT as the others in order to be very productive. Gio worked himself into being a super sub. Terzic uses him that way because it’s actually great for the team. If Gio were 35 it would be great for him but at 21 it’s different.

Being Mr. Instant Offense is great but it’s not the kind of thing that Gio was going to be happy about forever so they had to let Gio go out and test the waters.
So now Gio and his people know what is out there and Terzic and BVB can make their case with Gio as to why it might be better for Gio and BVB for Gio to finish his season at Dortmund. I’m pretty sure Gio would have preferred more desirable clubs to be coming after him. If Gio buys into Terzic’s plan and plays well then:
        • Gio gets more PT
        • When he is sold it could be for much more
        • It might be to a club Gio might like more
Gio has always been held in high regard by the BVB management as another of their “buy cheap, sell high” products like Pulisic, Sancho, Dembele, Haaland and Bellingham, BVB will not let him go on the cheap.
And BVB don’t want to let him go until they can get back closer to that 42 million you talked about. That is their organizational identity. They will get him more minutes and build him up and then sell him in the summer. It might have gone that way anyway. That would be in the best interest of all involved. Battling relegation? Chasing the Champion’s League? I know what I’d rather do.

You talk about his attitude, Gio’s attitude issues with the USMNT are well documented (and also over, if we are to believe what the players tell us and what we saw on the field at the Nations League) but other than his frustration with his limited PT( and BVB and Terzi clearly understand that and went to great pains to let us all know that they understand that ), BVB have always spoken very highly of Gio and his attitude. They strongly defended him when the whole little league parents thing blew up on Gregg.

Have you seen anything to indicate that Gio has been a Diva shitbag at BVB?

Based on what I’ve seen at Euro clubs over the years what Gio pulled in Qatar was pretty minor league and hardly worthy of notice.

And what the Reynas pulled with the USSF probably would not work at a professional. reputable club.

      • V: all those guys were there in 2021 when Terzic was manager, yet he choose Gio over Brand and Reus. 18 yr old Gio he loved, 20 yr old Gio he barely even notices.

“Whether it’s injuries since or attitude, the manager or management has drastically changed his attitude towards Gio”, I’m not trying to imply anything here, I can’t figure it out. BvB has crashed his market value by not playing him. If you’re managing minutes due to injury and using him as your super sub you don’t only play him when you’re up two or down two like they did all last year.
        ————————
My theory is this, I said last winter the Reyna plan was to impress at the WC and then move. Gregg messed that up by playing Weah (who got the big move) and Dortmund moved on because Gio wanted out. With health still a question and attitude problems swirling Jan was out for a move last year. Then he broke his foot/leg during NL so Aug move was basically out (Dortmund supposedly shopped him). Dortmund has signed multiple players at his position because they don’t expect him to be there next week and really despite statements to the press really don’t want him to be. But that’s just guessing based on actions not everyone’s words.

Generally speaking, Juve is broke, so with regards to McKennie, Juve was desperate, and Allegri had no one else that was a better option than McKennie. That’s not genius…that’s pragmatic.

Gio’s production was LAST year, NOT this year. This year, Gio’s production is zero…0 G, 0A. Dortmund is a factory that produces young talent…no one is irreplaceable.

“…So now Gio and his people know what is out there…”

This January transfer window is hardly a full representation of what is out there. The upcoming summer transfer window will present more options and will be more representative of “what is out there.”

…”And BVB don’t want to let him go until they can get back closer to that 42 million you talked about…”

It’s going to take a lot more time than the rest of this season at Dortmund for the Dortmund Sporting Department to see a transfer fee anywhere near $42M for Gio. With Gio’s contract up June of 2025, that is unlikely.
In order for that to happen at Dortmund, it would require all parties to agree on a new contract, with increased wages for Gio. Also, unlikely.

        —————————————————————————————————–

“…BVB have always spoken very highly of Gio and his attitude…”

The last time that happened, it was January 2023, and it hasn’t happened since then. In recent times, if you read between the lines, Dortmund’s position, and corresponding communication(s), has ( have ) been quite the contrary.

        —————————————————————————————————–

Have you seen anything to indicate that Gio has been a Diva shitbag at BVB?

Yes, and for anyone else that has watched Gio play for Dortmund this season, it is clear that the answer is, “yes.”

…UNLIKELY…unless Terzic is fired. If that happens, Gio staying at Dortmund because a legit possibility.

        Gio looked good in 2021.
Now there’s more choices than Gio, Brand and Reus. We haven’t mentioned the kid named Jude who was also around in 2021 and improve quite a bit the last few years. I’m confident that Jude took playing time away from Gio and everyone else before moving on.
In 2020-21 BVB finished 3rd, 14 pts. out
In 2021-22 BVB finished 2nd, 8 pts out.
In 2022-23 BVB finished 2nd on Goal difference.
Right now, 19 games in they are 13 pts behind the leaders.
The last two seasons before this one, they have had a realistic shot at winning the title. As Gio has been trying to get back to his former stature, expectations changed and the stakes got a lot higher.
My guess is this made Terzic a lot less able to grant Gio game time to knock off the rust and show how he has evolved. So they don’t play him because he’s rusty and he’s rusty because he doesn’t play.
So BVB have the present day Gio, not really knowing how good he is because he hasn’t had a long enough run to make his case. Worse, potential buyers have a hard time projecting as well.

        • Is Terzic convinced that Gio’s best role is Mr. Instant Offense, the Super Sub?
        • Or is he using it as something to keep Gio interested and productive until Reus retires and Brandt is inevitably sold?
        • Or is Gio being a brat and Terzic is disciplining his little diva shit bag?
I doubt anyone on the outside really knows.

BVB’s handling of Gio is not necessarily unreasonable when viewed from a BVB viewpoint. After all he is only 21 and they can afford to wait on him.
Shockingly USMNT fans and probably Gio himself are a lot more impatient.

“My theory is this, I said last winter the Reyna plan was to impress at the WC and then move. Gregg messed that up by playing Weah (who got the big move) and Dortmund moved on because Gio wanted out. ”

That’s the best point anyone has made in this thread.

“With health still a question and attitude problems swirling Jan was out for a move last year. Then he broke his foot/leg during NL so Aug move was basically out (Dortmund supposedly shopped him).”

        Timing is everything.

” Dortmund has signed multiple players at his position because they don’t expect him to be there next week and really despite statements to the press really don’t want him to be. But that’s just guessing based on actions not everyone’s words.”

What BVB want is to make as much money as they can off of Gio. This straight loan probably should have happened a lot earlier , but , as you point out, circumstances really didn’t allow for that to happen. It’s interesting that they continue to take great pains to say really nice things about Gio, even though they really don’t have to. You never know, he might turn into a monster at Forest.

After all this speculation and gossip, Gio finally gets show his stuff

I know. That’s why I wrote what I did. But even with all of that, letting Weston play himself on or off the team was a high risk gamble. At a club like Juve, in the midst of a title race, you don’t take that kind of chance with a player unless deep down you’re pretty sure he will come through.
My guess is that Allegri did his homework. That’s why they pay him the big bucks, he has to be right more often than not with these kind of decisions.

No shit. Dortmund are 19 games into this season, are in 4th place 13 pts’ behind the leaders. Last season they lost the title on goal difference.
So it looks to me like no one is doing all that well at the moment. Terzic probably has one foot out the door and BVB is in a bit of turmoil now. And by the way, Gio missed the opening month of the season through injury.
This Reyna soap opera has been unfolding for a few seasons now.
You’d think that BVB should have been arranging this loan before this season began but Gio’s injury probably killed that. Finally this loan seems to have been the direct result of Gio signing Mendes in December, just before the transfer window opened. It feels like Gio recovered but still wasn’t getting PT so he finally made the agent move.

In spite of that Gio got quite a lot of interest for a player who, on paper and in the eyes of his USMNT fans , is a useless POS.

And, as important , they know that BVB weren’t dying to get rid of him for nothing. There is no purchase option in the loan. He will be back at BVB. That tells you he is an asset that BVB value.
Gio also now knows that he has to play well and stay healthy at Forest.. This is most likely it for him if he wants to stay in the big time. And that’s very useful knowledge.
