Gio Reyna’s future remains uncertain at Borussia Dortmund

Gio Reyna looked task to do big things at Borussia Dortmund, but it now looks like the American playmaker will have to head elsewhere if he wants to become a regular contributor.

Reyna’s future at Signal Iduna Park remains uncertain, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl confirmed in an interview with Sky Sports Germany on Sunday. Reyna, 21, played the final two minutes on Saturday of Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 league victory over SV Darmstadt.

The U.S. men’s national team midfielder has been reduced to just 12 combined appearances (320 minutes) across all competitions, opening the door to a potential exit from Borussia Dortmund this month.

Although Kehl didn’t confirm an exit for Reyna, he admitted that it’s been a frustrating season for the talented attacker.

“Gio has had a difficult time and hasn’t played much. It’s not easy with the line-up we have in midfield,” Kehl told Sky 90. “There is a lot of competition for places in his position. I can understand that there might be a certain amount of dissatisfaction. But it’s also important for him to step on the gas. I can’t say at the moment whether he will stay.”

Reyna has totaled 17 goals and 16 assists in 119 combined appearances for Borussia Dortmund since debuting for the first team in February 2020. Injuries have also plagued his time in Germany though, forcing manager Edin Terzic to call on others at times, especially this season.

Whether or not Reyna remains a Borussia Dortmund player by February 1 remains to be seen, but a move away could ultimately be the best move with a crucial USMNT schedule coming in March and June-July.

  1. if he insists, the places actually playing americans at elite clubs are italy and holland. but rumor i heard was villa, which has an american owner, but top few EPL tend to be skeptical of and sit/loan americans.

Strangely familiar line from a coach. Is this his tag now?

      • Keep hearing Sevilla or Sociodad. Apparently, his new agent is tight with the manager at Nottingham Forest, but of course they might be penalized for finances. I doubt it will be a big name club like AC Milan or top EPL.

      • Agreed. he is going to be on the move, and because of Terzic, he needs to move.

Sevilla is currently a cluster, so it would be prudent to stay clear of there.

He would fit in with Real Sociedad’s playing style, and with Kubo gone, it would increase his chances of playing time, but does anyone seeing him starting there if he is on a 6 month loan?…or playing big minutes / role?

Jorge Mendes places a lot of players at Wolves…just saying. Thoughts?

The front office at Dortmund like Gio, but Terzic clearly does not rate him / trust him, but the irony is that Terzic is not long for that seat, and after he gets bounced, if Gio was still around, he would get an opportunity.

      • Papi, Mendes used to be associated with Wolves, but I think that relationship ended. Wolves were also formerly led by Mendes client managers Lage and Esposito Santo (who according to Wikipedia was Mendes first client when he was a player). I don’t think O’Neil is a Mendes client. But from the looks of the roster they could use an attacking player.

      • Johnnyrazor,

While the shenanigans / relationship between Fosun and Gestifute of buying, selling, and routing players to certain teams, may have been “formally” kyboshed, the tentacles of Mendes reach far and wide in global soccer. To that point, while O’Neill may not be a Mendes’ client, neither was Lotepegui, and Mendes continued to transfer in players ( Matheus Nunes and Goncalo Guedes ) when Lotepeugi was in charge. While the inflow of Mendes’ clients to Wolves has definitely slowed down, he continues to have multiple clients at Wolves ( Sa, Semedo, Doherty, Semedo, etc. ), so the Mendes / Wolves relationship could certainly have the potential of Gio moving there.

      • Papi, for sure meant to add but obviously he still has contacts and relationships within the organization.
