Coventry City remains well in the fight to earn promotion into the English Premier League this spring and Haji Wright’s productivity is a major reason for it.
Wright scored three goals in two appearances over the past week as the Sky Blues earned victories in both EFL Championship and FA Cup action. The U.S. men’s national team attacker earned SBI Americans Abroad Player of the Week honors after contributing in back-to-back wins for his team.
The 25-year-old Wright led the line for Mark Robins’ squad on Wednesday as the Sky Blues rolled past Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 in FA Cup replay action. It had marked Wright’s first goal contribution since New Years Day as Coventry City reached the FA Cup quarterfinals.
After scoring midweek, Wright followed that up by finding the back of the net twice on Sunday in Coventry’s 2-1 comeback league triumph over Millwall. Wright equalized for the hosts from the penalty spot before delivering the winning note only two minutes later.
Wright has now recorded 10 or more goals in each of his last four seasons at club level, which included past stays in Turkey and Denmark. The Sky Blues will hope that Wright’s production doesn’t dip with two trophies still to play for this season.
Here is a look at some of the other top Americans Abroad performers from this past week:
Taylor Booth
Taylor Booth is finding form at the perfect time for FC Utrecht.
Booth scored twice on Sunday in Utrecht’s 4-0 Eredivisie win over Fortuna Sittard, giving the American attacker five goals in his last two appearances. After registering his first hat trick last weekend, the 22-year-old found the back of the net twice in a second-straight victory for the club.
Antonee Robinson
Fulham’s six-match winless streak ended on Saturday with USMNT left back Antonee Robinson excelling against Bournemouth.
Robinson logged a strong 90 minutes in a 3-1 home win at Craven Cottage, continuing what has been a stellar Premier League campaign. He led all players with three tackles completed, while also winning 10 of 12 duels.
Dante Polvara
It’s been a productive run of late for Dante Polvara.
Polvara assisted once in Aberdeen’s 2-0 Scottish Cup victory over Bonnyrigg Rose on Saturday. It marked the second appearance out of the past three for Polvara in which he has registered at least one assist.
The 23-year-old has continued to play a key role for the SPFL side this season.
Johnny Cardoso
Johnny Cardoso’s fourth-straight start for Real Betis proved to be his best yet.
Cardoso’s assist led to Betis’ opening goal in a 2-0 triumph over Cadiz. The USMNT midfielder stole possession in the first half before setting up Willian Jose for a 1-0 Betis lead. In addition to his assist, Cardoso was also strong defensively for Manuel Pellegrini’s men.
What did you think of these individual performances this past week? Was there anyone left off the list that you would’ve added?
