Josh Sargent stays hot with fourth goal of 2024

2024 is turning out really well so far for U.S. men’s national team striker Josh Sargent.

Sargent scored his fourth league goal of the new year and his seventh overall in Norwich City’s 2-2 EFL Championship draw with QPR on Saturday. The American striker headed the Canaries back in front at Loftus Road Stadium in the second half before QPR equalized later to earn one point.

After Jack Colback and Kenny McLean traded goals in the first half, Sargent boosted David Wagner’s squad in front with a powerful header. Jack Stacey’s cross was finished off by Sargent for his second goal in back-to-back matches.

Michael Frey’s 77th minute equalizer though helped QPR walk away with one point on home soil.

Sargent finished the match with 66 minutes played while fellow USMNT teammate Reggie Cannon went the distance for QPR. Both players will be pushing for international involvement this March when Gregg Berhalter’s squad face Jamaica in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals.

Norwich City sits eighth in the league table and next hosts Watford on Tuesday.

  1. I’m so old that I remember watching David Wagner play for the USMNT against Costa Rica (I think it was CR) in a WC qualifier maybe in San Jose, CA or Palo Alto, CA. Anyone out there who can help me on this one?

The only one anywhere near San Jose or Palo Alto was vs. Canada at Stanford stadium.

The only other game David played with the USMNT on the west coast was on March 14th, 1998 vs Paraguay in a friendly in San Diego at SDCCU.

      • Stanford Stadium is in Palo Alto. Well it used to be now they say it’s in Stanford which is really just the campus area.

  2. The video quality isn’t great but that sure looks like it was Reggie Cannon he was jumping over. As a USMNT fan you win some, you lose some, I guess.

Sargent’s been on fire pretty much every game he’s played this year. If only he hadn’t missed, like, 20 games in the middle….

The grey cloud is that if the form he’s been in while healthy is even remotely indicative of his actual current level, he’d likely be near or at the top of the Championship’s goalscorers’ table. Which would almost certainly have gotten him a bump up to the Prem whether or not Norwich secures promotion. You score 20+ in the Championship, somebody in the Prem will buy you, and he’s well above that pace.

Hopefully his long injury spell does not cost him that opportunity.

Dude is doing exceptionally well. Hopefully someone notices.

Josh is a ginger. They have weird perceptions and prejudices about gingers over there.
