Americans Abroad Player of the Week: Brenden Aaronson

The 2023-24 Bundesliga season hasn’t been one to remember for Brenden Aaronson, but Saturday’s Man of the Match showing will certainly go down as one of his main highlights.

Aaronson scored his second league goal of the campaign as Union Berlin defeated Werder Bremen 2-1 at home. The U.S. men’s national team attacker delivered a strong 78 minutes from his midfield position, helping Union Berlin earn its eighth league triumph of the season.

Aaronson doubled Union Berlin’s lead in the 52nd minute, celebrating his first goal of the season in a start for the club. He won 12 duels, completed five dribbles, and drew one foul in his best performance to date during his loan spell from Leeds United.

Despite not originally being called in for USMNT duty, Aaronson will now embark on international duty following a pair of injuries in the squad.

Here is a look at some of the other top Americans Abroad performers from this past week:

Haji Wright

Coventry City are headed to its first FA Cup semifinal since 1987 and Mark Robins can thank Haji Wright for it.

Wright scored the winning goal for the Sky Blues in Saturday’s 3-2 quarterfinal triumph over Wolves. The American striker delivered the deciding goal in the 100th minute at Molineux, propelling the EFL Championship side into the tournament’s final four.

Wright now has 15 goals across all competitions and also will be fighting for USMNT minutes this month.

Antonee Robinson

Fulham earned a statement victory over London rivals Tottenham on Saturday with Antonee Robinson excelling at Craven Cottage.

Robinson assisted on the winning goal and also delivered a solid two-way shift in a 3-0 result. The USMNT left back won five duels, made four interceptions, and nine recoveries.

The 25-year-old Robinson has remained a consistent performer this season and now enters USMNT duty on a good run of form.

Christian Pulisic

AC Milan booked its spot in the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals this past week with Christian Pulisic excelling in a second leg win.

Pulisic scored once and assisted once as AC Milan defeated Slavia Prague 3-1 away from home and 7-3 on aggregate. The USMNT star has continued to shine for the Rossoneri this season, totaling 19 goal contributions across all competitions.

Now he will have USMNT duty to focus on with the Americans seeking another Nations League trophy lift.

Joe Scally

Joe Scally helped Borussia Moenchengladbach earn one point on Saturday in a 1-1 draw with Heidenheim.

The 21-year-old Scally excelled at left back, drawing two fouls, winning seven duels, and making seven clearances. Scally has made 25 Bundesliga appearances this season, rotating between left and right back.

With Sergino Dest suspended for the USMNT’s Nations League semifinal vs. Jamaica, Scally is the candidate to start at left back this week.
