USWNT to face Mexico on July 13 in pre-Olympic friendly

The U.S. women’s national team’s penultimate match before the 2024 Summer Olympics has been decided.

Mexico will oppose the Americans at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on July 13, U.S. Soccer announced Friday. The match will also serve as an 25th anniversary organized reunion of the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup-winning side to celebrate the USWNT’s major achievement.

The friendly has been named the “Impact 99” match.

“This will be a fun and inspirational weekend,” said U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone, herself a key member of the 1999 Women’s World Cup Team who scored in the semifinal of that tournament.

“The fans will get the chance to show their support for the team before they head to France while also celebrating our 1999 Women’s World Cup Team. This is a group of women who did so much for the sport and the impact of that team and tournament is still being felt 25 years later, especially as we bid for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. I can’t wait to see my teammates and friends.”

Both the United States and Mexico have submitted a joint bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. FIFA’s decision is expected to be announced this May.

It will mark the third all-time showdown between the USWNT and Mexico at Red Bull Arena, with the past matches taking place in 2011 and 2019 respectively. The Americans defeated Mexico 3-0 in the 2019 friendly, which served as the final pre-World Cup friendly for the USWNT before they won the competition that summer in France.

Mexico defeated the USWNT 2-0 in their most recent matchup at the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup.
