The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will not be coming to North America.
U.S. Soccer and the Mexican Football Federation have withdrawn their join bid to host the competition, both federations announced Monday. Both federations will instead focus on obtaining the hosting rights for the 2031 Women’s World Cup.
“Hosting a World Cup tournament is a huge undertaking — and having additional time to prepare allows us to maximize its impact across the globe,” U.S. Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone said in a statement.
“I’m proud of our commitment to provide equitable experiences for the players, fans and all our stakeholders,” she added. “Shifting our bid will enable us to host a record-breaking Women’s World Cup in 2031 that will help to grow and raise the level of the women’s game both here at home as well as across the globe.”
The U.S.-Mexico joint bid was one of three finalists for the 2027 World Cup alongside Brazil and a joint bid from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. The FIFA Congress are set to vote on the 2027 host on May 17 in Thailand.
48 teams are planning to feature in the 2027 Women’s World Cup, which would be the largest tournament field in the history of the competition. If the U.S. and Mexico did host the 2027 edition, it would come one year after both countries, along with Canada, would’ve hosted the 2026 Men’s World Cup.
“The strength and universality of our professional women’s leagues, coupled with our experience from organizing the 2026 World Cup, means that we will be able to provide the best infrastructure as well as an enthusiastic fan base that will make all the participating teams feel at home and to put together a World Cup that will contribute to the continued growth of women’s football,” Mexican Football Federation president Ivar Sisniega said.
The United States had previously hosted the Women’s World Cup in 1999 and 2003.
I would guess Brazil wins the bid. Germany had it in 2011 and France in 2019. Canada in 2015. They have never had a Women’s World Cup in South America.
Hedging the growth of the women’s game will continue. With 48 countries represented by 2031 60,000 plus stadiums will be needed over 25,000 seats. The rise of African and South American teams will add more global appeal in consumerism. The TV contract and ad space will also be exponentially greater.
Also NWSL will continue to grow in appeal and most of all attracting global talent. NWSL already top to bottom is the best women’s league in the world. Attracting global talent with substantial pay and green cards will continue to feed the league and raise global talent level.
That the US hasn’t hosted a Women’s World Cup in 5 cycles now going on 6, is astonishing to me. The USWNT has been consistently the best team in the majority of those cycles, has probably had the consistently best managed and funded women’s league up until the last few years, as well as the best facilities and infrastructure. Fan turn out and hunger for hosting another WC plays into these decisions/bids I’m sure, but more importantly, it seems that not hosting a WWC since ’03 has also been attributable to FIFA wanting to grow the women’s game in other parts of the globe which is commendable, and probably the right way to go about meeting that goal(which seems to be paying off)!
And 2003 was only because of SARS or whatever forcing it to be moved from China.
Translation: They weren’t going to win the 2027 WC.
