Tyler Adams’ frustrating period on the Bournemouth sidelines will unfortunately continue this weekend.
Adams will not be in the squad for Bournemouth’s trip to Arsenal, manager Andoni Iraola confirmed Friday. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder remains unavailable due to a back injury which has kept him out of action since late-March.
The 24-year-old has not featured since excelling in a 2-1 league win over Everton on March 30. He has not dressed in each of the last five Premier League matches.
Adams made his 2024 debut on March 13 for Bournemouth before featuring for the U.S. men’s national team in CONCACAF Nations League action against Jamaica and Mexico.
Bournemouth has three league matches remaining against Arsenal, Brentford, and Chelsea before embarking on a summer preseason tour in the U.S.
Adams’ continued absence is a major worry for USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter, especially with the Copa America tournament on the horizon.
I just don’t see how he’s healthy or fit enough to use this summer, and even if he gets healthy before Copa, his minutes on the field will have been severely limited meaning his form his not where it needs to be to compete at an international tournament like CA. Let him rest and get right this summer so he can hit the ground running next season for Bournemouth
He was very instrumental in the US winning Nations League in limited minutes.
absolutely, but he also wasn’t coming off of several injury set backs, and had fully recovered from his hammy surgery with training sessions in between as well with positive reports. That’s not this is it?
Could any of this by any chance have to do with a contract situation?
That is, this sounds cynical, but …
Do Bournemouth have to pay him, or his previous club,* less money if he hasn’t played a certain number of games or minutes per season? Would they then benefit financially from just sitting him for the rest of the year, and then starting over in the fall?
*Leeds? Does anyone even remember his one season at Leeds? He knocked himself out and ran a lot for Jesse Marsch, then everything went south and they sold him for a largeish sum?
It does seem really disheartening that he’s spent so many years now just growing older and not really playing enough in what should have been his peak years. But if anyone has the intelligence and strength of mind to keep rolling with the punches time after time, surely it would be him.

I would some there are some add ons in the transfer (those are usually not released) based on his time missed for injury this season he’s probably far from meeting any of those targets anyway.
Why would Bournemouth risk it if he’s not 100% they are basically locked in their mid table spot. They aren’t going to get to Conference League and aren’t going to be relegated. Yes they want to win but these games are meaningless to their end of year results.
that is the optimistic version. the more cynical version is he gets loaned down a division or to a lesser league to pursue fitness and minutes.
I mean I guess maybe, but both times as soon as he was healthy they threw him on the field so they seem to believe in him. I guess if they go and find another DM in the transfer window then we can see that happen.
I think at this point Adams needs the summer to get healthy. It will be hard for both parties i.e. Adams and the USMNT to make this decision, but he needs to be right for his club for next season.
That is one way to look at it but the other is if he is healthy you bring him because he is more likely to not be healthy than healthy so saving him for something in the future may be pointless. Copa could very realistically be his last opportunity to play in a top level international tournament if he is healthy by then.
the US used to be bright about sometimes bringing in players they viewed as talented and part of the regulars, but underused in club, for summer tournaments. this was back when we went more with a longer term sense of quality and less the club form roller coaster of “this month.” i actually would advocate that and have done so for players like reyna and richards. several weeks of camp and games for a summer can get them fitter and sharper, and also undermine the club manager’s excuses.
however, broken record, you don’t call hurt players. he barely played then went back down hurt. we should be using copa america and the camp before it as an extended tryout camp for 6s. in this situation it’s up to him to get healthy enough he should be consuming rotational minutes and the shrinking amount of time and tourneys we have before 2026. i know he’s young but it’s his job to get past his fitness issues. i say fitness issues because i think a lot of the problem is he ends up shelved for the previous thing, and if you sit a long time, you fall below the fitness threshold where you get muscle pulls and back problems like a sunday leaguer. what he needs is time to get in shape without needing to worry about soccer games. so he doesn’t need our game schedule.
Best post ever – using Copa America as an extended tryout for 6s.
I don’t know if that logic is the right approach to take, this idea that he may not be healthy in the future so risk his health in a CA when he’s not in form and has played limited club minutes all season, and let’s be honest, Copa America ain’t Nations League! If he’s healthy you obviously consider it, and with the tournament now seemingly set for 26 man rosters it makes it easier to call him in and bring him along slowly from game to game, but it’ll be a risk no matter how we look at it

You bring Adams if you think he can be effective through the two warm up friendlies and then the three Copa games in a week, with four days in between. Not to mention any additional games if we advance out of the group.
The question is would you rather have Adams break down early in this process, in the middle, or break down late?
Or would you prefer to start with whoever Gregg deems a suitable Adams replacement and go with that option from the start?
It could make for better team cohesion.
The conditions (5 games between June 8 and July 1) are likely to be unkind to unfit players. Adams is definitely not completely fit.
I list him in the provisional list but I would not bring Tyler. or bring him in as your #26 man and don’t play him. if you’re that worried about it.
His style is based on pushing his body to the limit. Based on how it has been going the entire time in the UK, I don’t see Tyler getting through those five games and any additional games, fit and healthy.
I would tell Gregg, starting with the Colombia and Brazil games, to implement whatever his plan was to make up for Tyler’s absence ( Johnny, Musah, formation change).
In other words, start the succession plan now. Gregg will never have a better chance to test his Tyler solution against real teams not the usual softies. If it starts out shitty and Gregg gets cold feet he can always bring in Tyler later.
If nothing else, you’ll have a lot more clarity heading into 2026.
Tyler truly is just snakebit. You gotta feel for the guy; he’s had two careers’ worth of injuries to suffer through already and he’s not even 25.
Hope he’s there for us this summer. We can surely use him.
I think we all do, but at what risk if he’s not fully fit and doesn’t see any more club minutes before the season ends? Listen, we would all love Tyler to be at and playing in Copa America, but there is the rest of his club and international career to think about, and ONE moment in time this summer shouldn’t be the focus with a WC at home in 2 years time the more important tournament to be ready for! Just my opinion though…..
