USMNT stays at No. 11 in June FIFA Rankings

The U.S. men’s national team stayed just outside of the Top 10 in the first FIFA Rankings of the summer.

The Americans stayed at No. 11 after a 0-1-1 record during their friendly schedule earlier this month. Gregg Berhalter’s squad suffered a lopsided 5-1 loss to Colombia before tying Brazil 1-1.

Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah both celebrated goals in the matches.

The 5-1 loss to Colombia was the largest margin of defeat for the USMNT during Berhalter’s two spells as head coach. However, their 1-1 draw with Brazil marked the first time in which the Americans tied the South American giants.

Mexico dropped to No. 15 while Panama and Canada rose to No. 43 and No. 48 respectively. Costa Rica and Honduras rounded out the top-six CONCACAF nations.

2022 FIFA World Cup winners Argentina remained in the No. 1 spot while runners-up France stayed in the No. 2 place. Belgium stayed as the No. 3-ranked team while Brazil leapfrogged England into the No. 4 spot and the Three Lions fell to No. 5.

Portugal, Netherlands, Spain, Croatia, and Italy rounded out the Top 10 overall.

The USMNT’s 2024 schedule continues on Sunday with the first of three Copa America group stage matches. Bolivia will oppose the Americans in Arlington, Texas before Panama and Uruguay also meet the USMNT in Group C play.

  1. We’ve always been a round of 16 country. I’m not surprised, are you? 8 countries make it to the quarterfinals at every major tournament, so being top 10 still doesn’t get us a satisfying ranking, at least for the people that understand this. America participates in the Copa, one time per decade. Last time we went under a German coach, we played in the 3rd place match. Got 4th. My expectations are set at least in the 3rd place match. USA gets the semis, I’m confident that fifa will rank the country higher.

    • We got kind of lucky that Keylor Navas didn’t play in CA Centenario, he was 7-1-2 against the US or don’t get out of the group. Then Colombia played their 2nd team against Costa Rica so we got Ecuador in the knockouts. Although much like this year we were supposed to play Brazil in the quarterfinals but in 2015 Brazil under performed and didn’t get out of the group. Your draw has a huge impact. In 2015 we were supposed to be 2nd in the group and lose badly to Brazil, just like this year. Perhaps we’ll again win the group and this time face Paraguay.

  2. The rankings look pretty good to me. Your opinion like everyone’s else’s is just that. Is USA ranked ahead of Mexico? It would make sense that we are.

  3. The legitimacy of FIFA’s world rankings have always been in question and quite frankly, they’re farcical.

    The USMNT is 11th, huh? We’re better than Colombia ( 12th ) and Uruguay ( 13th ) ?

If only we had a tournament that we could play in, so we could put these rankings to the test.

We’re better than Germany (16th ) ? If only we could play them to test how we actually match up with them on the field.

We’re about to get a dose of reality…no more CONCACAF opponents or minnows. You’re on the clock, Berhalter.
