Venezia in contract talks with Tanner Tessmann amid Bologna, Torino interest

Tanner Tessmann is set for his return to Serie A next season and reportedly could have a new contract to go with it.

Venezia is in talks with Tessmann over extending his contract past June 2025, TuttoMercato reported. The news comes amid growing interest from fellow Serie A sides Torino and Bologna in Tessmann’s services.

Tessmann joined Venezia in July 2021 and recently helping the club earn promotion back to Italy’s top flight. A 1-0 aggregate victory over Cremonese helped Tessmann, Gianluca Busio, and Co. clinch the last promotion spot out of Serie B this past season.

The 22-year-old midfielder was sensational for Venezia, scoring seven goals and adding three assists in 42 combined appearances. Tessmann’s next competitive appearance for the club will be his 100th in Venezia colors.

He is currently with the U.S. Olympic Team ahead of a June 11 friendly vs. Japan in Kansas City. Tessmann is pushing to be part of Marko Mitrovic’s final roster for the trip to Paris, France this summer.

Bologna’s fifth-place finish in Serie A last season clinched them a spot in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League while Torino finished ninth in the league table.

  1. Soon there will games to argue about instead of hot dogs and luck. Although, I must admit I enjoyed looking at the old match reports for several games to see the lineups and stats so that was pretty fun.

  2. he’s playing plenty, he’s going to the olympics, he might sneak in the senior team 6 conversation depending what we see from johnny. stay put. vibe to me feels like agent leverage. i hope. sure, venezia, he’ll come back, but he has other interest, how about a raise.

  3. Really? I actually think the regista role – or at least the modern evolution of the regista role – might be a really good fit for him. In a lot of ways he’s a bigger version of Michael Bradley and better on the ball – he’s really, really snaky with the ball at his feet, shockingly so for such a big player, actually, has a lot of those slick dragback moves you always used to see Xavi and Pirlo using. And he’s an exceptional long passer.

    • Q: just not sure he’s ready for that as a starter with a CL club in Serie A. I’d imagine he’d be the starter at Venezia (don’t see them make a big signing in DM) but would probably have limited minutes at Bologna. Torino I haven’t seen as much and honestly when I saw both clubs this season I was paying more attention to Juve and ACM.

    • Tessman mostly resembles Michael in that he’s about the same height. Otherwise I see little resemblance, football-wise.

Michael was a 7 year pro at a higher level than Serie B before he signed for Chievo. He was also an experienced USMNT starter ,winning a Gold Cup and being a vital cog in the 2009 Confederations Cup, the only major FIFA senior tournament where the USMNT has made a final. And of course, he grew up as Bob’s son.

Italy did make Michael a better player but he was a pretty heady , experienced player before he went to Italy. Tessman should also benefit from his time at Venezia;he already has.

But he’s untested at the higher levels, even the USMNT level, while Michael was already an experienced pro for club and country before Italy. Comparing the two is not very realistic and unfair to both.

  4. I think Torino and Bologna would be good spots for him. Neither have a surplus of talent that he’d have to fight through but are good enough that they won’t likely be mired in a relegation battle like Venezia probably will be. Not sure what role Tessmann would have under Vincenzo Italian at Bologna who typically uses a Regista for his 6. I’m not sure Tanner is ready for that role in Serie A.

    • JR, on a different thread, Vac and I are arguing about whether or not Gregg is lucky. When I told you I was looking for an argument as a joke in response to one of your posts, it turns out that I probably really was.

      • JR and Tele,

“There is an ongoing debate about whether or not a hot dog fits the description of a sandwich. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) has declared that a hot dog is not a sandwich. Hot dog eating champions Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi agree with the NHDSC.

Merriam-Webster, on the other hand, has stated that a hot dog is indeed a sandwich. United States Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg also weighed in on the matter, stating that a hot dog might be categorized as a sandwich, but ultimately it comes down to the definition of a sandwich. She went on to acknowledge that a hot dog bun is a single roll that is not sliced all the way through and in that way is similar to a submarine sandwich.

In June 2022, Jon Batiste stated that hot dogs were his favourite kind of sandwiches when he was given the Colbert Questionert by Stephen Colbert.”

Gregg is not an overly lucky manager. However it seems to me that if you cut the hot dog bun ALL the way through, it now fits the definition of a sandwich.
