Tyler Adams needs to “relax a little bit” following latest injury setback

Tyler Adams’ latest surgery has provided the American midfielder with a new view on his career.

Adams, who underwent back surgery after his international involvement at the Copa America, is set miss the start of AFC Bournemouth’s English Premier League campaign. The 25-year-old featured in four of the U.S. men’s national team’s matches earlier this summer, including all three group stage matches on home soil.

However, even Adams’ best efforts couldn’t help the Americans avoid an early exit from the competition.

Following a permanent transfer to Bournemouth last summer, Adams missed most of the season after re-aggravating a hamstring injury and also enduring back spasms over the final few weeks. Still, the aggressive midfielder did feature for the USMNT, which has now led to his latest spell off the field.

Adams will want to feature heavily for the Cherries this season and manager Andoni Iraola will hope to have him available as soon as possible. Knowing that he isn’t a youngster anymore, Adams admitted that he needs to be smarter with his choices on the field.

“After Copa, I was still feeling a little something,” Adams said in a recent episode of The Cooligans podcast. “So I’m happy to have that dealt with. I’m going through a rehab process now. I won’t miss too much of the beginning part of the season. So hopefully four or five games, three or four maybe. And then hopefully I can just fly through the season and have some consistency.

“I think the biggest thing for me is, throughout the rehab process, throughout the way that I play in games, it’s only 100 percent for me,” he added. “Every single day in training, every single day in games. And I don’t have an ability to tune it down a notch. So sometimes I just need to realize I need to take a step back and just relax a little bit. I’m starting to learn that a little bit more and more. But yeah, I go 100 percent all the time. So yeah, that’s probably why I’ve been injured a little bit more recently.”

Adams’ injury has forced him to miss Bournemouth’s pair of preseason friendlies on U.S. soil this summer. In addition, he will miss the Cherries final preparation matches against Rayo Vallecano and Girona.

Bournemouth opens its Premier League schedule at Nottingham Forest on August 17 before additional matches against Newcastle United and Everton later in the month.

  1. Cardoso and Reyna are better than Adams, its my opinion. If we had a coach that would have patience and sense to build chemistry would be great. MMA is not it, also if you keep on pressing and moving quickly you can easily break through that three in the midfield and one will lose their mark for a goal for the opposing team. MMC or MMR is better, or put 4 in the midfield. Since Adams is out I would not mind if the next coach bought back the Bob Bradley Diamond, It looked better and was more organized than MMA. Players actually also performed their roles better and had better instructions. Just my opinion, not going back and forth with anyone on here.

    • Reyna needs to get his club situation figured out. Kid has talent, but you could tell during the Copa tournament that his lack of club soccer is effecting his play. He has stagnated.
