Tyler Adams to miss start of Bournemouth season after undergoing back surgery

AFC Bournemouth will not have the services of U.S. men’s national team midfielder Tyler Adams for its summer tour, or the start of the English Premier League season.

Adams is sidelined indefinitely after undergoing back surgery, Cherries manager Andoni Iraola confirmed Friday. After suffering a Copa America group stage exit earlier this month, Adams underwent the surgery to deal with a back issue which lingered over the final two months of the 2023-24 EPL season.

The 24-year-old joined Bournemouth last summer from Leeds United, but after undergoing a second hamstring surgery in October, Adams was forced to miss ample time on the South Coast. After returning to action in March, Adams made three appearances for the Cherries before joining up with the USMNT in June.

However, fighting through his back issue has now led to Adams’ latest setback, continuing the frustration for him and Iraola.

“He wanted to play Copa America because it was very important for him, but he had restrictions and was still in pain, so two days after they were knocked out, he had surgery,” Iraola said in a prematch press conference. “He is out for some time. It is difficult to say how long but he won’t be fit for the start of the season. But September? October? I don’t know.”

Bournemouth opens its preseason U.S. tour on Saturday against League One side Wrexham before also taking on Arsenal four days later.

The Cherries will open their Premier League schedule on August 17 at Nottingham Forest.

  1. You can’t play players, no matter the age, significant minutes in the international game, and never sub or rotate them while they play significant minutes for their club. The collateral damage is the human body. Again, for the people in the back, Captain Adams is 24, the brain doesn’t fully develop to age 25. As a community, we keep forgetting that these players are humans not robots. Did Adams ever get subbed out during the WC? Captain Adams ran more than any player in the 22 WC. He’s supposed to be injured. Why do we not get this? He ran more miles or kilometers than the most traveled players like Luka Modric, Rodrigo De Paul, & Jude Bellingham. GB brought LDT to a WC injured. Brought an injured Sargent to the Copa. Brought a useless Scally to a WC. No one said a thing. And now… we’re upset?! You’re for injury prevention while wanting & watching the same players over & over with no complaint?! Watch out for the fake outrage for Captain Adams and this injury. Btw – McKennie nor Musah are good at the 6. For 5 years we’ve seen Musah or McKennie play the 6 at times. Offensively, with them playing a defensive position, we are consistently terrible. You know what’s a genius idea? Let’s put McKennie at the 6. You what’s a similar great idea? Musah can play the 6. Captain Adams is the best 6 we have because he’s likes to dispossess & deliver the ball to the offense. The 6s job isn’t to lead the team in assists. Chris Durkin was next in line in the youth setup & could be in line at the senior level. After C Durk, then it’s Cardoso, Tessman is an American version of Loftus-Cheek, an attacking midfielder. Mallory & Sands are better served as ball playing CBs.

If you’re suggesting that fans demanded Tyler’s presence and were silent about Gregg’s strange roster choices you’re making up stuff.

The amount Tyler was used in the run up to the World Cup and during it, as well as the same thing with Copa America, was the responsibility of three entities:
      1. Tyler
      2. Gregg. ( and his fitness staff)
      3. Whatever club Tyler was with at time.
As JR pointed out, they signed off and gave the other two entities control of Tyler’s PT when they could have just declared Adams unfit and pulled him as is their right. Instead all three entities had Tyler play every minute of Qatar 22. And then they sent him into what everyone knew was going to be a physically tough Copa America when he had only played three games all season.

” And now… we’re upset?! You’re for injury prevention while wanting & watching the same players over & over with no complaint?! Watch out for the fake outrage for Captain Adams and this injury. Btw –”

?? Fans on SBI had no say . Gregg didn’t even call IV and ask his permission. There is lots of blame for this disaster but none of it falls on SBI. More than a few posters here were saying Gregg should not take Tyler to Copa and leave him home to recover and give a guy like Jonny ( who is Chris Durkin?) a real chance at making his case in real time under real pressure.

And a lot of those same posters pointed out that Gregg had run his starters, including Tyler, into the ground in the run up to and in the WC itself. You may have noticed how it was clear that we had run out of gas vs. the Netherlands.
Lots of people here have been warning that Tyler was going to fall apart sooner rather than later. It’s been obvious for a very long time that Tyler was going to need to be protected from himself.

So leave your false outrage at home. You’re pissing in the wind. Better yet go yell at Tyler, Gregg and the people at Leeds and Bournemouth.

  2. Woody Allen once said that 90% of success is showing up. You can be super great, but if you can’t play it doesn’t matter how good you are. I think McKennie can take that role, or maybe Johnny. Fortunately we have a growing pool of good midfielders.

    • Defensively Adams is one of a kind. Make no mistake, this is a major blow for USMNT. Maybe Musah can grow into that role, but probably this means a major change in system/formation as we don’t have another 6 that can cover the whole field.

  3. I am disappointed at both Tyler, Gregg and the federation.

Tyler owes his club, who is paying him more than many people will earn in their lifetime, his best efforts to rehabilitate his body and perform the tasks he is paid to do

Gregg and the suits should never have brought an unfit player to a major tournament. It destroys their credibility with clubs, it tells fit players that they will never get thir shot so long as [insert marketable name here] can hop around for 45 minutes, and it never really works out positively on the field. Lots of downsides few benefits.

I would have thought that US soccer would have learned that from last year’s women’s world cup fiasco, but alas, the names may change but rhe idiocy remains. Meet the new suits, same as the old suits

    • Bournemouth shares just as much blame. They can deny call ups if a player is injured even in a FIFA window. They signed off on this too. Player, Fed, club all share in this.

    • Tyler may have lied about how much pain he was in, so while it’s the cool thing for some reason to always go after management and the Fed, I think Tyler has to carry the majority of this blame

      • “Tyler may have lied about how much pain he was in, ”

Of course he lied. They all want to play so they all lie.

But Tyler is an asset, worth x amount. If you are Bournemouth you should have a detailed history of his injuries.

Have you ever hurt your back, Ronniet?

The kind of injury Tyler has, you can only hide it so much, especially if you are an athlete. All they had to do was watch him closely as he moved about the facilities. Plus, lie about an injury and it might get him into serious trouble with his employer.

In other words, I have no way of knowing for sure but Bournemouth seem pretty nonchalant about the whole thing.

    • Just like the Holland game giving up the ball that lead to a goal and not marking his man. Again, this is my main complaint about Beerholder he was awful at evaulating talent and he trotts out players that are not 100% fit. Also look how he sacrificed the team and we played in that cold game in Minnesota where several players got injured.

  4. Oh lord. Should have been left off of the roster. That surgery could have been done far earlier.

Well now it’s time to really give other players their chances.

    • Plenty of CM’s were in form. There was no need for Adams to be on the roster. And it was clear he he couldn’t move around like he had.

Another roster decision failure for GGG.

      • Coaching is a thankless job, so I am very measured about FANATIC insanity, and in any many cases, sheer ignorance, but damn did GB get this one wrong. Let him play in the NL when he shouldn’t have, and now this. Hell, I recall Adams getting upset a few times about being pulled to limit his minutes. That speaks volumes about the coach in so many ways. Not in a good way. FANATICS over rate our players, and over project constantly, but when complaints arose that he was to comfortable with the players I was on board. Hell, I don’t think he was to comfortable, but it seems clear he was to submissive in many ways. Oh well,.

    • Agreed. Tyler is his own worst enemy. Isn’t this multiple times now he needed recovery and/or surgery and he decided to wait. Ridiculous TBH. Love the kid to death but damn there needs to be an adult in the room. Stick a fork in him as far as I am concerned. I don’t expect him to be anywhere close to where he was after this. He simply can’t be allowed to step right back in. Again, love the kid but enough. Best of luck Tyler but goodbye until you actually show you can play somewhere. Not helping yourself or us. If you can’t destroy 100% your passing is so weak as to be a detriment. Just the way it is.

      • Remember John O’Brien? Tyler is this era’s version. I’m writing him off maybe a guy who makes the Wirkd Cup roster but i wouldn’t count on him for 90 minutes multiple games.
