Weston McKennie arrives in Turin ahead of reported Juventus exit

Weston McKennie made his return to Turin on Thursday ahead of a reported exit from Serie A side Juventus.

McKennie arrived at the Juventus’ training facility for medical examinations, Tuttosport reported Thursday. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder will not be with the first team for upcoming summer friendlies against Nuremberg, Stade Brest, and Atletico Madrid.

The 25-year-old midfielder is coming off a productive campaign for the Old Lady, winning the Coppa Italia and helping Juventus finish in the top-four of Serie A. He registered 10 assists in 38 combined appearances, logging just under 3,000 minutes of playing time.

However, the departure of manager Massimiliano Allegri earlier this summer has led to Juventus listening to offers for McKennie’s services. MLS side Inter Miami was the most-recent outfit linked with McKennie, while English Premier League club Aston Villa also expressed interest.

McKennie had a busy international schedule this summer with the USMNT. He featured in all five of their matches, including three in the Copa America.

The USMNT suffered an embarrassing group stage exit from the tournament, losing two of their three matches on home soil.

  1. How come nobody in the comments knows that WM is one of our best players? Weird to hear everyone talk about him as if they know him. You guys are soccer fans right? Maybe stick to being soccer fans and not comment as if you know anything deeper than being a fan of people playing soccer. 🙂

  2. Sounds like Fiorentina’s also started asking about him, according to the Italian papers. Probably a good restart and a better fit, though they just missed out of European competition for the coming year. I’d love to see him there though, potentially with Tessmann, who Fiorentina are also pursuing.

    • where does WM fit in a 4231? tessmann isn’t anywhere near as good a player but he has a more definite DM role. WM was a mid for juve but my experience in a 352 was the mids just interchanged up and back. the big question on WM to me remains what his role should be, including swiss army guy. schalke literally played him everywhere. i say this because he’s a weird fit for a 4231. is he a DM there? a sole 10 (to me he’s no reyna)? a wing?

  3. Oh my how quickly things can change. I was so happy encouraged mid season with his fitness and lively, creative play, deft passing. Gave me a reason to keep tuning into the otherwise dreadful Allegri-ball played at Juve. I’m not exactly sure what happened in the last month- never know what’s up in a man’s personal life etc. Something going on as he certainly didn’t do himself too many favors at the Copa. With a managerial change bringing uncertainty regarding his status at Juve, Wes had a chance to showcase himself. Unfortunately he mostly disappeared on the pitch when it comes to play and his characteristic joy, but instead highlighted his new found girth. Hard not to like the dude, I hope he finds a good home and his spark.

  4. This is going to be interesting. He and his father’s “pay me” attitude after one “productive” season sandwiched between his poor Copa and his poor Leeds loan will make for an interesting next month.

    • You beat me to it. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of interest given his dad’s wage demands. The Leeds flop doesn’t help.

      • Never works when parents keep thinking they need to push their kid’s status at youth club when in reality it’s professional team and the kid is supposed to be a grown ass man now
