Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers will be joined by a fellow U.S. men’s national team teammate this season.
Auston Trusty has joined the reigning Scottish Premiership champions in a permanent deal from Sheffield United, both clubs announced. The Blades will reportedly receive a $7.8 million fee for Trusty, who signed a five-year deal with Celtic.
“We are so pleased to sign Auston and he is a really welcome addition to our squad,” Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said. “He is a quick, strong, athletic defender with great ability and good experience and a player who has done really well to make his way to the USA national squad.
“We are really looking forward to working with Auston,” he added. “I know he is really excited to be joining Celtic and looking forward to facing the challenges ahead and playing his part as we strive to bring our fans success once again.”
Trusty, 26, made the move to Bramall Lane last summer from Arsenal and proceeded to make 34 combined appearances for the Blades. However, Chris Wilder’s men suffered relegation from the English Premier League, dropping back into the Championship.
The former MLS homegrown defender only featured in a pair of EFL Cup matches this season, being an unused substitute in all three of Sheffield United’s league matches. Trusty also made 48 appearances for then-EFL Championship side Birmingham City in a loan spell during the 2022-23 season.
Celtic hosts Rangers on Sunday in the first Glasgow Derby of the SPFL season.
Trusty is one of those players who is maximizing his career. Just like LDLT has. They should be commended for their achievements, but they are both very limited players. Many fans always assume improvement. Sometimes a player is what he is. Good on Trusty, but if Nat fans look at him as a possible answer they will be disappointed.
Come on, Larry. He played the entire 90’ during last Saturday’s league game.
Get that money, kid, and I hope living in Glasgow is better than Sheffield. Good luck against Dortmund and Atalanta.
Well at least we will have two CB’s playing next to each other at the club level which could be beneficial.
He will get some European experience too.
Agreed 2 TONE, would be nice if they were a deadly pairing that works well together at Celtic and USMNT
I think it’s time to move on from Ream. These two together will be good. And I really think Trusty is very similar to Ream in playing style with a bit more athleticism. Just needs to read the game a bit better.
2tone,
“Just needs to read the game a bit better.”
Is that all?
Some players read the game very well at a young age. Some take a while to learn how to do that. Some never learn. Ream was very good at it and it is one reason why he lasted so long.
This is the old intangibles vs tangibles debate. Trusty has the tools, the athleticism , etc.
The main issue at this point is what is between his ears. We’ll soon find out.
2tone, I’m not sure Celtic will help you read the game better. CCV looked 2 steps slow to react this summer.
Indeed!
Johnny, I wonder if playing in a ball dominant team like Celtic eventually dulls the senses to when an attack or counter attack is brewing… It seem to me that CCV struggles to respond to counter attacks that are building quickly.
Maybe that is because Celtic has the ball all the time and they press and pressure teams in such a way that they only have one real attacking outlet (that is also easy to defend). Obviously that’s not true with the international level.
