Marco Reus joins LA Galaxy as free agent signing

Marco Reus has become the newest European star to make the jump to MLS.

Reus signed with the LA Galaxy on Thursday on a free agent deal, the club announced. The Galaxy acquired the Discovery Priority to Reus from Charlotte FC in exchange for $400,000 in General Allocation Money ($100,000 in 2024 GAM; $300,000 in 2025 GAM).

He will occupy an International Roster Slot on the Galaxy’s roster after signing a two-and-a-half-year contract through 2026.

“Marco Reus is a world-class player who has excelled at the highest level of the sport, including playing in two Champions League Finals for Borussia Dortmund and in the FIFA World Cup with the German National Team,” said LA Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz.

“For Marco, a two-time Bundesliga Footballer of the Year, to join the Galaxy after playing his entire career in Germany is a testament to the project we are continuing to build at the club. We look forward to Marco’s contributions to the LA Galaxy as we enter the critical final stretch of the 2024 MLS season and beyond.”

The 35-year-old most recently spent the last 12 seasons with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, where he totaled 301 goal contributions in 429 career appearances. He was twice named German Footballer of the Year (2012, 2019) and named Bundesliga Player of the Year on three occasions (2011-12, 2013-14, 2018-19).

After beginning his professional career with Rot Weiss Ahlen, Reus later joined fellow German club Borussia Mönchengladbach. He totaled 69 goal contributions in 109 matches played before making the jump to Dortmund.

Internationally, Reus scored 15 goals and added 14 assists in 48 career caps for the German men’s national team.

The Galaxy are top of the Western Conference in MLS play with 46 points earned this season.

  1. LA’s about to pass teams off the pitch. If they had wingers who could create like a Bounga they’d be pretty unstoppable

  2. Considering the type of player he is, you figure that he has 2 or 3 more good seasons in him. Good signing by the Galaxy.
