Gianluca Busio’s memorable day with Venezia was capped off with the American midfielder delivering the winning goal for the club.
Busio scored the winning goal Saturday in a 2-0 Serie A victory over Genoa. Saturday marked Busio’s 100th career appearance for the club.
After a goal-less first half, Busio delivered the breakthrough moment for Venezia after the hour mark. His right-footed cross nestled into the bottom-right corner for a 1-0 lead after 63 minutes.
Venezia would ice its first win of the season as Joel Pohjanpalo finished off John Yeboah’s assist five minutes from time.
Busio played 89 minutes in the match, creating two offensive chances, winning four duels, and drawing two fouls.
The 22-year-old only recently returned to action after being sidelined through injury.
Venezia closes its September schedule on Sept. 29 at AS Roma.
JR, 2tone,
“Dempsey taking awhile to become the first choice starter in EPL a little different than Busio struggling to get in the lineup in Serie B. ……. Duece’s club path reminds me more of Weston because every year he’d have to prove to the manager and by the middle of the year he’d be starting.”
This is something of a big exaggeration. People love the Clint fighting anti American prejudice narrative but the truth is , if Clint had to prove himself, it didn’t take him very long. The numbers prove that.
Clint was about 24 when he got to Fulham. He had developed at Furman and at the Rev’s where Nicol would play him as a #6 sometimes.
Clint in England
League App. All Apps. Goals
2006–07 EPL 10 12 1
2007–08 EPL 36 40 6
2008–09 EPL 35 41 8
2009–10 EPL 29 44 9
2010–11 EPL 37 42 13
2011–12 EPL 37 46 23
Clint had to prove to himself to new managers but ALL players do.
The thing about Clint at Fulham was he had a lot of managers. 7 in 5 seasons.
In the time frame, that’s a lot of fucking managers.
That tells you more about Fulham than Clint.
In his first season, 2006-2007, he signed in the Jan. window so he only had a half season. That was his orientation time. Even then his only goal that first season literally guaranteed Fulham’s place in the EPL so he saved them from relegation.
After that he averaged about 42 appearances and 12 goals per season for Fulham and in his last season in England, for Spurs. To put that in context, if you research the other Fulham regulars of that era , guys like Murphy, Haangeland and Dembele they all averaged about the same amount of appearances.
He was greatly appreciated for almost all of his time at Fulham by the management. The amount of time they put him on the field tells you that. Same with Weston at Juve.
What the fans and media think, that’s out of anyone’s control.
Busio is obviously very well thought of at Venezia. That doesn’t mean he’ll be at the World Cup. I hope I’m wrong but Venezia are probably going down in flames. Tessman was right.
Busio has a lot of competition for a spot in the USMNT and hasn’t really looked great for the senior team.
But at least he is a great story.
It’s probably a bit of the Deuce Mystique. I looked it up first 3 yrs 58 starts in 80 matches but if you take out the first half season it’s 57 of 70 started. Even at Spurs he made 22 starts in 29 plus all 4 cup matches. So maybe we’ve all heard a few too many “stories” from Clint about how this or that manager did him wrong.
JR,
“if you take out the first half season it’s 57 of 70 started.”
He went there in the January window so I count that first half season as his orientation season. And of course, his only goal in that time saved them from relegation, a preview of things to come I suppose.
A big part of it is that Deuce is that classic “postionless” guy.
I think he mostly was a left midfielder/winger guy who moved everywhere.
No one really knew what to call him so to the casual observer it seemed like he was a swiss army knife “utility” guy.
In reality he was always “the midfielder/forward who scored off of mistakes ( usually not pretty goals) or he scored golazos- when-you -needed- it” guy.
Player of the Match by Gianluca Busio (6:50 below) . He was the best AND MOST INFLUENCIAL PLAYER ON THE FIELD in that game. He scored one goal but miss several others, not to mention his vision, first touch and passing all game…….he was in the mood!!!! The only thing missing from this kids game is right now is “strength and stamina” on the ball……and we have a serious baller.

Agreed Bizzy, came here to echo the same thing. Busio dedinitely looked like theor best player and should have had at least another goal, the header he put just over the bar after he made a great run from midfield.
He looks like he belongs in Serie A, but unfortunately I don’t think Venezia have enough to stay up. He keeps this up though and he’ll be snatched at the very minimum next summer by a bigger team for sure
We need more slow burn guys like him in the US. We are so desperate for the big name/team player, but those come in cycles. We need more guys who simply develop and improve over time. That’s how you create a base. The stars make the team but the ceiling is raised by how many solid guys you have. Busio has competently improved. He looks and plays like a true Serie A player, even on a poor team. He will be scooped up no matter what happens to Venezia and he will have value. Well done son.
Yep. All national teams have players like this. McCallister for Argentina is a prime example.
Clint Dempsey is another example.
First time I’ve ever heard someone describe Clint Dempsey as a slow burn development guy?
He was. Clint did most of his best work from 2009 until 2018.
Before that he wasn’t a consistent starter.
Busio is only 22.
“Clint Dempsey is another example.”
Gianluca at Venezia resembles Clint at Fulham in only one way: they both played a lot of their club’s games.
That’s about it.
I think you’re stretching a bit, but given the difference in eras it’s hard to compare the two’s development. Dempsey taking awhile to become the first choice starter in EPL a little different than Busio struggling to get in the lineup in Serie B. Also Duece was putting up big numbers for the NT even when not starting at Fulham. Duece’s club path reminds me more of Weston because every year he’d have to prove to the manager and by the middle of the year he’d be starting.
I think it’s a more realistic career path than Gio (approximately same age). Kind of insane some people think if you aren’t starting for the NT as a teenager that you’re career is over.
Really excited about his continued development. Seems to be getting better and better. Was Venezias bright light against Milan. And was sorely missed after he picked up an injury at the Olympics. Would be interested to see how looks in the USMNT midfield as a creator 8.
Sometimes you need to get a little bit lucky.
