Gio Reyna suffers setback in injury rehab, sidelined until mid-November

The woes continue for U.S. men’s national team attacker Gio Reyna.

Reyna, who previously was making progress in his injury rehab at Borussia Dortmund, suffered a setback, manager Nuri Sahin confirmed Friday. The 21-year-old is now slated to be sidelined until after the November international break.

Reyna had been out of action since suffering a groin injury on international duty in September. He missed both of the USMNT’s home friendlies against Canada and New Zealand that month.

Injuries have plagued Reyna’s time at Borussia Dortmund, forcing him out of 54 potential matches. He’s only logged nine minutes in the current Bundesliga campaign.

Reyna’s scored 17 goals and registered 17 assists in 122 combined appearances for the Black and Yellow.

Reyna’s latest injury spell will likely force him out of CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal action in November. The USMNT face Panama and Mexico this month before opening competitive play under Mauricio Pochettino in November.

  1. In 2002, John O’Brian was probably the most talented member of the USA’s squad (Sorry Claudio). O’Brian was plagued throughout his career by injuries, yet was an important part of that US squad that reached the quarter-finals.

I hope Gio recovers and stays healthy. He is only 21 and he seems to have grown taller and bigger in his time at Dortmund. Often players get injuries as their bodies get used to their increased size (Pulisic?) Now that he is now almost full-grown, his injuries should become less frequent.

    • Reyna, Duranville, and Adeyemi all out with injuries. Certainly a chance he could make his debut this week. I was surprised he wasn’t included in the U20 side, but with the U20 WC now officially in September 2025 there’s no way he’ll get released anyway for that.

      • Sheesh. Most Countries will suffer that date. Especially their more talented players that won’t be released.

    • These FIFA youth tournaments seem to be getting more irrelevant every cycle. Most young talent has already been identified by European teams.

  2. I would be fine with Gio not making an USMNT appearance for a year to get healthy and to solidify his club situation. While he brings something creatively unique to the USMNT, its not like the team is dependent upon him and the USMNT has been trying to figure out where he fits since before the last WC in Qatar.

He should get healthy and get confidence from playing regularly with his club, and then be a key creative force during the 2026 WC. But if he can’t get healthy, he is a distraction to the team’s plans – or maybe just to me as a fan.

  3. What else is new…I hope I’m wrong but it’s really looking like Reyna’s career will forever be a “what could have been.”

  4. Shocking to everyone, I’m sure.

At some point, what you see is what you get. His dad was likewise magnificently talented…and likewise made of glass.

We’ll have Gio when we have him, but at this moment it’s pretty clear we can’t count on that. World Cup rosters are 26 players deep, and if he’s available I’d certainly give him a long look for one of spots 24-26, but is he a guy Poch will really be able to justify rating in his regular 23? He needs to turn it around in a hurry.
