Josh Sargent stays hot with fourth assist of season

Josh Sargent’s goalscoring abilities have made him a fan favorite at Norwich City, but his distribution has certainly been on display in recent weeks.

Sargent registered his fourth assist of the EFL Championship season on Saturday as Norwich City tied Stoke City 1-1 at the Bet365 Stadium. The U.S. men’s national team forward’s contribution helped him stay on pace to set a new career-best for assists in a single season.

The Canaries struck first in the 45th minute as Ante Crnac scored for a 1-0 opener. Sargent’r original effort was blocked in the Stoke City box, but the rebound fell to Crnac who made no mistake.

However, Million Manhoef equalized for the Potters in first-half stoppage time, giving the hosts an eventual share of the spoils.

Sargent, who featured in both of the USMNT’s matches this international window, logged 90 minutes in the match. He had three shots blocked while also winning one duel.

The Canaries are seventh in the Championship table heading into a midweek clash with Preston North End on Tuesday at Deepdale. They are riding a five-match unbeaten run in league play, which has kept them in the top half of the standings.

  1. Mat,

    Beggars can’t be choosers

Do we have eleven players who are playing regularly in first divisions?

Jedi. Richards, CP. Weston,Scally, Mckenzie, Balogun, Paredes.

Weah. Pefok, our keeper’s are spare parts. Holland and Scotland are not top 5 leagues.

Do you consider MLS or Liga MX first division?

  2. We need to stop hyping performances by players in second divisions.
This leads to unrealistic expectations and disappointment when these players are confronted to senior level international football.
Glad to see Sargeant is doing OK in a mid-range second division team but I don’t think it’s anything article worthy until he can do the same in a higher league team vs stronger competition.

  3. Until he does something meaningful for the US when called up I am going ro continue to have my reservations about him. He hasn’t scored a goal for the US since 2019.

    • Agreed. And I think we have to add Malik Tillman to the mix.

I mean at least Pepi has had goals and some really timely ones too!

    • In his defense, he’s been injured a lot. He also requires service from midfielders, which he gets at Norwich. He’ll never make something out of nothing like Dempsey. Wynalda, McBride, and Dempsey were proven strikers who could be relied upon to put the ball in the net. Unfortunately, the US hasn’t produced a striker of that quality in some time, and Flo just isn’t there. We don’t even have anybody to hold up the ball. Jozy never quite lived up to his potential, but he drew fouls.

      • Mcbride lived off of service.

While he has had injury issues he has had plenty of op0ortunities as well. He doesn’t use his frame well nor does he get involved in the build up. Hard to get the ball ti someone who doesn’t exactly hold the ball up well and doesn’t exactly look to get open. This has been his issue since his Bundesliga days.

      • Yes, McBride needed service, and he was a solid hold-up player who could lay off balls to DMB and Donovan and his Fulham teammates. Per my earlier post, once he retired, we have been missing someone who can win the ball and then hold it until the others join the attack.

      • 2tone,

Werder Bremen rarely played Josh as a Target man/ #9 striker a la McBride.

Whether that’s because Josh sucked or the coaches did, I don’t know, I saw him play as a winger, midfielder, defensive midfield.

If there was such as thing as a defensive striker Josh was it. I was waiting for them to play him as a keeper and have him and run up on corners and set pieces.

As for McBride note that he did not score his first USMNT goal until he was 24 which is how old Josh is now. And Brian did not sign for Fulham until he was 31.

Josh may or may not be a bust. Some things take time.
