Johnny Cardoso, Aidan Morris to miss USMNT-Jamaica second leg showdown

Mauricio Pochettino will be down two of his midfielders for Monday’s CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal second leg showdown vs. Jamaica.

Johnny Cardoso and Aidan Morris will miss the second leg in St. Louis due to respective injuries. Cardoso will miss the match due to a left hamstring strain while Morris is sidelined to a knee sprain.

Cardoso was substituted in the 21st minute of the USMNT’s 1-0 first leg win in Kingston on Thursday. The Real Betis midfielder missed the October window through injury and now will have to overcome a new issue when he returns to Spain.

The 23-year-old has earned 18 caps to date with the USMNT and overall has made 15 combined appearances for Real Betis in four separate competitions this season.

Morris, 23, made the move to English Football League Championship side Middlesbrough this summer from the Columbus Crew. The two-time MLS Cup winner jumped right into Michael Carrick’s squad this season, logging 17 appearances and over 1,300 minutes to date.

He’s earned nine USMNT caps to date since debuting in January 2023.

Both players will head back to their respective clubs to continue rehabilitation and no injury replacements will be made on the roster.

The USMNT holds a one-goal aggregate lead in the two-legged series, seeking advancement to their fourth-straight CNL semifinal.

  1. They looked much better when Johnny was in. Sometimes you notice a player who is doing a lot of little things value more in their absence.

I’d like Weah LW, Musah RB. Let’s get’um.

  2. I’m bummed by Johnny being out. It’s funny the wide range of takes on his 20 minutes from the last game. To me he held the midfield together in his time while Tessman was working himself into the game (then did well thereafter). I really would like to see him with the first more.

This second game is going to be tough and very interesting!!!!! Nerves might just get the best of some players on home soil due to a lot of “unreasonable” expectations (fans, podcasters and spot analysts alike)

  4. I wish he would call up Pax, he is better and knows how to use his body as a shield to not get knocked off ball. Have no idea why people rate Brenden over him, when IMO, Pax is the better player.

    • I’m with you on BA. Dumbfounded, actually. It seems like his commitment to press and win back the ball was previously valued higher than the amount of time he loses the ball once he has it.

      • Well there is the 8g 6a. Basically the same as Gio in 300 more minutes and better than Tim Weah in less minutes. The biggest thing is unlike Gio, Balo, Tim, Josh, Christian, and now Paredes he’s been healthy most windows. Like Arriola before him Brenden is undersized and not the most technical but he puts in a shift and is a poacher with knack for putting it in the back of the net. Shouldn’t ever be first choice but with other attackers injured he’s going to be in the mix.

      • DC Josh,

Michael Bradley was almost always healthy , fit and available.
That was one of the reasons he had a long and fruitful USMNT career.

Managers, especially international ones, really appreciate consistent, reliable availability.

I don’t remember BA ever being unavailable for selection.

      • Vacqui,

Correct. The best ability is still availability.

There’s a reason BA already has 14 more caps than John O’Brien ever got in half the years.

  5. It’ll be fascinating to see how Poch adjusts to the return of Weah. The most obvious solution would be to just put Weah back at his usual RW spot and bump Musah to the 6 spot vacated by Cardoso…but Pochettino is also not Berhalter and you don’t bust up the mentality of the old squad by doing the exact same things with your squad.
