SBI USMNT Man of the Match: Christian Pulisic

Christian Pulisic propelled the U.S. men’s national team into the Final Four of the 2024-25 CONCACAF Nations League.

Pulisic scored twice as the USMNT defeated visiting Jamaica 4-2 in quarterfinal second leg action in St. Louis on Monday. The AC Milan star earned Man of the Match honors for his multi-goal performance at CITYPARK.

The 26-year-old broke the deadlock in the 14th minute after delivering his 32nd international goal. Pulisic snuck behind the Jamaica backline before receiving an over-the-top pass and flicking into the far right corner of Andre Blake’s net.

Pulisic extended the USMNT’s lead in the 33rd minute by delivering his second goal of the match. A fortunate deflection off of Di’Shon Bernard helped Pulisic celebrate his fifth USMNT goal of 2024.

Ricardo Pepi and Tim Weah added goals of their own to pad the USMNT’s victory despite Demarai Gray pulling two goals back for Jamaica.

Pulisic logged 69 minutes in the match, earning his 76th cap for his country. He completed two dribbles and won two duels while also registering his sixth multi-goal performance.

The Pennsylvania native edged Antonee Robinson, Weston McKennie, and Ricardo Pepi for Man of the Match honors.

What did you think of Pulisic’s performance? Do you see him continuing to play a large role for the USMNT heading into 2025?

  1. The Hispanic Spanish language commentators on the Univision/Telemundo feed (Andres Cantor, Manuel Sol, and our own Tab Ramos) were dithering over who should get man-o-the-match honors and felt strongly that Jedi Robinson had an outstanding match, in his new floating LW / CM position weaving in and out of Tim Weah, and C. Pulisic, and controlling a lot of the flow on the left side of the pitch.

Despite Pulisic having two goals they felt it was Robinson who earned the honors.

To be sure CP had a great game, and I found that he wasn’t forcing the issue as often as he does in some games where he tries to be the hero, and carry the ball into traffic, when he should be looking to combine play with his teammates. I saw him in a more thoughtful and playmaking role, taking his attacking runs forward into space more judiciously, and thus more effectively. CP also got cut, and dealt a lot of lumber. On Weah’s goal he got shoved in the back hard, and went flat onto the pitch face first as he fed the R flank and basically wound up eating a mouthful North-Bridge Bermudagrass. He got chopped down a lot, as usual. And was none too pleased about it.

His first goal, catching McKennie’s cross on the bounce, one-touch, with his left instep into the far side netting was a thing of beauty! Overall, the team looked lively, well connected, and dangerous all first half. I like what Poch is doing so far. Hopefully we can get Reyna, Adams, Dest, Robinson, et al, back into the mix soon.

He “tries to be the hero ” a lot because he’s often been surrounded with shit.

” And was none too pleased about it.”

Should he be pleased? Usually the rest of his chicken shit team mates let him get beat up. It looks like Pochettino had to remind them to protect their meal ticket.

Maybe it will be different in the future but right now, w/o CP this team is fakata.
