Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Musah, Aaronson, and more

AC Milan’s Serie A form has been up and down in the new year, but the Rossoneri are well on their way to the UEFA Champions League knockout round.

Wednesday’s 1-0 home win over Girona moved AC Milan into sixth place in the league phase standings. U.S. men’s national team midfielder Yunus Musah started and played 90 minutes in the result, striking the crossbar once and delivering a strong shift in midfield.

Musah won four duels, drew one foul, made two tackles, and two defensive recoveries. The 22-year-old earned a rare start in the competition, filling in for the injured Christian Pulisic.

Rafael Leao’s first half goal was all Sergio Conceicao’s squad needed to move to 5-2-0 in this season’s competition.

Musah and his Rossoneri teammates will next face Parma in Serie A play on Sunday before closing UCL group stage play on Jan. 29 at Dinamo Zagreb.

Elsewhere in Europe, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty helped Celtic to three points at home. Richie Ledezma and PSV claimed an important road win in Serbia.

In England, Brenden Aaronson and Aidan Morris picked up EFL Championship wins with their respective clubs.

  1. CP came in as a sub for Milan, played the 10 it looked like. I couldn’t watch the end of the game so don’t know how he looked. Musah had a rocket of a shot earlier hit off the inside of the far post, his offense is getting better, he could end up being a star in a couple years.

    • “his offense is getting better, ”

Maybe. He’s a better player now but his shooting accuracy is about what it was when he first came up, close but no cigar.

He has 45 caps and 1 goal. Tyler Adams has 42 caps and 2 goals. It wouldn’t shock me if he finished his USMNT career with fewer career goals than Tyler.

    • I like that idea 2 tone. Also like how Brandon Austin has part US Virgin Island ancestry . I have part ancestry from St Thomas/St. Croix in US virgin islands too, through my Eastern Puerto Rican heritage on my dad’s mom side. I don’t think he would have to do a switch, he has no nat team apperances, someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

      • I don’t believe so from what I can see he was always behind Ben Ramsdale and was never capped during the U21 Euros or qualifying. Had he saw the field he would have to file.

    • He’s played twice for Spurs giving up 2g in each game. His save percentage is 56%. By what metric is that “doing well?” His GA to xGot is 4 to 5.07 so that’s ok but not statistically significant on account of he’s played twice. I assume Poch and his staff would know him from his teenage days at Spurs.

      • JR,

For American goalkeepers, it is a low bar.
If Steffen does not make it back they could always try Guzan.

      • V: just for comparison Matt Turner has played 30 clubs matches over the last three seasons. Brandon Austin has played 3. Yes, three matches in 3 years, last season he was DNP coaches decision every week. He’s only played 21 professional matches total and he’s 26 years old. 14 in Denmark’s 2nd Tier, 5 in MLS. Spurs have run out 3 keepers since their #1 got hurt. Austin being their third choice. I hope he pulls out a Kurt Warner bagging groceries to winning super bowls Cinderella-type story, but this looks more like a Lyndon Gooch/Indiana Vassilev make some EPL appearances due to injury before falling back to obscurity. Ending up in MLS or League One.
