Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Reyna, Pepi, and more

Gio Reyna and Borussia Dortmund are heading into the UEFA Champions League knockout stage thanks to Wednesday’s comfortable home victory.

The Black and Yellow defeated visiting Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 at Signal Iduna Park, with Reyna coming off the bench and making an impact. Serhou Guirassy’s first half brace propelled Dortmund into a 2-0 lead before the Ukrainian side trimmed the deficit in the 50th minute.

Reyna entered the match in the 64th minute and helped Dortmund ice the result 15 minutes later. His back-heel assist allowed Ramy Bensebaini to deliver a third and final goal for the hosts, capping Dortmund’s fifth win of the league-phase.

It is Reyna’s first assist of the season across all competitions.

Borussia Dortmund will continue Bundesliga play on Saturday at Heidenheim, looking to snap a four-match league winless run.

Elsewhere in Europe, Ricardo Pepi and Christian Pulisic bagged goals in Champions League play. Weston McKennie and Tim Weah both started but Juventus lost at home to Benfica.

In England, Emily Fox and Arsenal advanced in the Women’s FA Cup.

  1. Reyna back-flick and deft finish… so saucy. Boring Dortmund looked like the former audacious Dortmund I loved to watch for a second there. More Gio!
