Ethan Horvath delivers Man of the Match performance in Cardiff City’s FA Cup win

Ethan Horvath didn’t show any signs of rust in his first Cardiff City start in over four months.

Horvath delivered a seven-save clean sheet as the Bluebirds ousted fellow EFL Championship side Sheffield United 1-0 in FA Cup play Thursday. The 29-year-old earned Man of the Match honors for his stellar performance, helping the Welsh club advance to the fourth round of the competition.

Cian Ashford gave the visitors a 1-0 lead after 19 minutes, breaking the deadlock from Bramall Lane. It was the 20-year-old’s third goal for the club in all competitions.

Louie Marsh was denied twice in quick succession by Horvath shortly after Cardiff City took the lead. Rhian Brewster was also repelled by the U.S. men’s national team veteran before Marsh was denied a third time in the first half.

Ryan One and Brewster tried to equalize for the host Blades in the second half, but Horvath was up to the task again.

Harrison Burrows struck the right post in the 88th minute as frustration continued for Sheffield United.

Brewster’s last-gasp header in second-half stoppage time was gathered by Horvath, sealing the road clean sheet for Cardiff City.

The result could be a major momentum boost for Cardiff City, who currently sit in the EFL Championship relegation zone. Horvath, who last started for the club on August 31, will likely get another opportunity in February’s fourth round.

Cardiff City will turn its attention back to league play on Jan. 14 against Watford.

  1. Yves, can you give a link showing Horvath as Man of Match? Ive read a bit about this match and virtually all had Ashford as MoM, and rated Horvath as “fine”. Would love to see a link showing more than that.
