Report: AC Milan continues chase for Gio Reyna

AC Milan showed interest in U.S. men’s national team midfielder Gio Reyna once before and is now reportedly back in the mix for him this winter.

The Rossoneri are targeting Reyna for a potential move to Serie A, TuttoMercato reported this week. AC Milan representatives reportedly did meet with Reyna’s agent in Düsseldorf, but the clubs have not begun talks yet, added Sky Germany.

The 22-year-old Reyna has remained at Borussia Dortmund despite past interest from AC Milan in Fall 2023.

Reyna recently scored his second Bundesliga goal of the season this week despite the Black and Yellow’s shocking 4-2 loss to Holstein Kiel. The USMNT attacker struggled for playing time last season before spending the second half of the campaign on loan at EPL side Nottingham Forest.

Reyna returned to Dortmund this summer and has overcome multiple injury issues to get back to playing regularly.

AC Milan already has USMNT stars Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah and could make Reyna its third American signing in recent years. The Rossoneri won the Supercoppa Italiana to begin 2025 but remains outside of the Serie A top four.

  1. if you read the article close, reyna’s agent and ACM are talking but ACM and dortmund haven’t chatted. so we don’t know if he’s for sale, or dortmund’s price. ACM has just touched base with the player on whether they would be interested and sounds like they got a yes.

i think ACM would want him as a swiss army AM/wing sub.
that is less than ideal. but story i hear is ACM threw around a $15m number. i think he’s probably worth $15-20m. i see him as in a catch 22 where if he goes by transfer his sale price sends him only to UCL type clubs where he might not start immediately.

he needs to either find a more eager UCL club where he is more in the rotation, spot starts, longer subs
    or
run out a deal for a change and sign someplace midtable. then produce, then work his way back to UCL from a position of strength.

i would say ACM does use CP and musah a lot.

    • Reports are Dortmund are looking for 15-18 million euros. That’s not a “not for sale” price. Initial rumors are ACM are looking to pay less. Of course none of this is official and any number and report are all just bargaining ploys by one of the sides involved. I’m with It’s below I’m not sure Gio fits their problem, but if Milan really want him BvB will sell him. I think other chips will fall before this moves into the club discussion stage. Where Rashford lands will effect how much money ACM has to spend on Reyna and a DM.

      • you’re finessing if they have a bunch of attacking AMs who don’t defend plus pulisic plus rashford, what is reyna’s possible role there. getting him out of dortmund is only half the game.

      • IV: my point really is if they’re complaining about 18 million for Reyna it’s because they need all their cash for Rashford. I don’t see them being able to add both Gio and Rashford without selling someone. They paid 22 million for Musah he wasn’t playing much for Valencia at the end and never produced the amount of g & a that Reyna has. ACM is holding back cash right now. Zlatan basically guaranteed Kyle Walker is coming soon, he’s probably fairly cheap at his age. Eustaquio is rumored to be coming as DM help also probably fairly cheap 10-15 million. Dortmund put in a 47.5 million euro bid for Rashford so for ACM to match that is there money left for Reyna to likely be a bench player behind Pulisic, Leao, and Rashford? I think if Rashford goes to Milan Reyna does not. If Rashford ends up at Barcelona then Gio is a fall back.

  2. With respect to the article, AC Milan needs 2 defensive midfielders. (Starter & backup) No midfielders on the roster have any defensive skills! It doesn’t matter how much Milan scores if they can’t stop anyone from scoring more goals. Right now, goal differential is +10. Maignan is awesomely good. Their back line is above average. Have yall watched this team play? I’ve watched a lot of AC Milan matches in the last few years. Giroud had the best effort on defense, every match when he was there. (Friendly reminder: He’s a CF, over the age of 30.) They have a roster full attacking midfielders and no starting 6, and back up. 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 alignment needs a base in the midfield. These formations require a player in the midfield to stop counter attacks, or passes to the attackers ; protect the backline, and get the ball to the offensive teammates. Sacrifice offense to only play defense. They haven’t had at least 1 defensive midfielder since CP has been there. (Tonali isn’t a 6). Musah, Bannacer, Fofana are 8s or right mids. Loftus-Cheek, CP, Reijenders are 10s or central mids, with CP being versatile enough to play on the wings. Will Gio do well in a league less athletic & physical? Yes, I agree. Will he do well with a team who have midfielders unwilling to put in work defensively because they want to only score? No, I disagree. FYI – CP isn’t a good defender & Leao’s effort is worse. This directly affects their teammates effort on the defensive side. Do not kid yourselves. When one of those 2 doesn’t hustle back on defense when they turn the ball over, pay attention to their teammates effort afterwards. It’s like a never ending buffer effect; or skip on a CD.

    • In terms of DM, they are trying to sign Ricci from Torino, but that sounds more likely for next fall and Eustaquio who played for Conceicao at Porto. Bennacer is supposed to be returning from injury.

  3. If he does join Milan now, I suspect they will use him for depth. It’s hard to come into a team from a position as a sub, to a regular player on your new club. However, I suspect it would be a good landing spot for him that could be valuable for him and for the team next season.

  4. I am here for this, great team chemistry builder. I feel like it will make Gio feel more comfortable, playing club and nat team ball with other USMNT players.

  5. At 15 million that would be a steal for Milan. Where would Reyna lineup? Probably CAM and he can also cover on the wings. Musah does a lot of great things, but he struggles on the offensive side a bit. Reijnders can go hiot and cold even in a 90 minute game. Do I think Dortmund will sell him in January? Right now 50-50 split on that.

  6. I’d like a Milan move for Reyna. There’s plenty of support there on the ground with Pulisic and Musah already there, the fan base is already primed to accept American players (a lot of places in Europe still aren’t), and the league’s technical, tactically sophisticated but not-quite-so-fast-paced-or-brutally-physical nature is, IMHO, a better fit for Reyna than hard iron man leagues like the Prem or the Bundesliga. It does look like Tijjani Reijnders is going to extend with Milan – spurning Man City and Real Madrid interest – so there is going to be less room at midfield than there would have been if Reijnders had left. Still, Pulisic and Reyna have shown they can co-exist and collaborate well in the past and that they really do not take up the same spaces on the field, and Milan is desperately searching for answers right now and only Reijnders and Pulisic have really impressed for Milan this season. So there is playing time to be carved out if Reyna does well.

I’ve thought for awhile Reyna probably was a better fit for Serie A (or La Liga)…hopefully we’ll get a chance to see if that take is correct. One thing anybody who’s ever watched Reyna at his best knows is, he’s absolutely got a breakthrough in the right situation in him, and a safe-but-underwhelming Milan side looking for a spark seems more likely to be that right situation than Nottingham ever was for him last year.

    • all of this
      great post q, thank you

the January transfers can be tough to just break thru, not that it doesn’t happen, but maybe a chance to impress in the longer term too

here’s an interesting recent quote from Coach Conceicao ““I don’t like the January transfer market very much, it always creates negative things in the players, on an emotional level. There are situations that need to be fixed, it’s good that we can get to this point. But it’s not the most important thing for me.”

      • It’s a gamble then isn’t it?

Does Gio think he’s on the cusp of getting back into the BVB regular rotation? If so that might be a safer path since BVB will be motivated to protect him and give him the support he needs. And if that happens and and he breaks through finally BVB would be a great place to do that. Their GD is +1 (32-31) so I think they like the idea of keeping Gio’s offensive capability .

On the other hand if Milan really want him and get themselves some additional defensive help along with Gio, there’s a lot to be said for that as well.

He should be okay either way. If they get to the summer and Gio is still at BVB and still hasn’t played a lot, then he’s most likely leaving anyway.

    • “Milan side looking for a spark seems”

      ???
      Milan GF29 GA 19 GD10.
Milan don’t seem to lack firepower.
You’d think they would want a healthy Tyler Adams not Gio even though Gio is defensively better than he was.
