USYNT defender Matai Akinmboni joins Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth now has two American players on its books for 2025.

U.S. youth national team defender Matai Akinmboni has joined the Cherries on a permanent deal from MLS side DC United, the clubs announced. The 18-year-old made his MLS debut at 15-years-old and proceeded to make 17 first team appearances for DC United, registering one assist.

He also featured for USL affiliate Loudoun United.

“We are delighted to sign Matai to a long-term deal with AFC Bournemouth,” Bournemouth technical director Simon Francis said. He is an exciting young player we have been monitoring for an extended period and have been impressed by his progress.

“Matai is a player we believe has a very bright future and we are looking forward to seeing him develop with us,” Francis added.

Akinmboni has featured for both the U.S. Under-19 and Under-20 men’s national teams to date. He’s earned five caps between the two youth programs.

He will likely begin with Bournemouth’s developmental squad in the coming weeks.
