Americans Abroad Player of the Week: Brenden Aaronson

Leeds United continues to roll at the top of the EFL Championship table and Brenden Aaronson has been a key reason for it.

Aaronson scored his eighth EFL Championship goal of the season on Saturday as Leeds United defeated Cardiff City 7-0. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder earned SBI Americans Abroad Player of the Week honors after setting the tone early at Elland Road.

Aaronson’s sixth minute finish kickstarted a busy day for Daniel Farke’s men, as the 24-year-old delivered his first goal of 2025. He logged 71 minutes in the match, racking up his latest start for the club.

Leeds United look set to earn promotion back to the English Premier League and having a confident and in-form Aaronson in the squad could lead to that becoming a reality.

Aaronson’s eight goals this season are a new career-high for the New Jersey native.

Continued success for Aaronson could lead to growing interest elsewhere this summer, but expect him to remain at Leeds United unless the team fails to earn promotion.

Here is a look at some of the other top Americans Abroad performers from this past week:

Josh Sargent

Three goals in his last two appearances have certainly provided a major confidence boost for Josh Sargent.

Sargent scored the winning goal on Saturday as Norwich City defeated Watford 1-0 away from home. The USMNT forward easily could’ve walked away with a few more goals too if not for Jonathan Bond’s efforts.

With injuries to Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright, Sargent may be the USMNT’s No. 1 striker option come March.

Mark McKenzie

Mark McKenzie celebrated his first goal for Ligue 1 side Toulouse on Sunday.

The USMNT defender helped Toulouse earn a 1-1 home draw with Nice, using McKenzie’s first goal to peg the visitors back. McKenzie continues to be a mainstay in the Toulouse starting lineup this season and will have more opportunities as the season pushes forward.

Chris Richards

Chris Richards delivered one of his best performances as a Crystal Palace player on Sunday.

Richards logged 90 minutes as the Eagles defeated Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford. The USMNT defender made 10 clearances, won nine duels and made three tackles as Crystal Palace extended its road unbeaten league run to eight matches.

Ricardo Pepi

Although he is now sidelined, Ricardo Pepi enjoyed a memorable performance against Liverpool.

Pepi scored his second UEFA Champions League goal of the season as PSV defeated the EPL leaders 3-2 in Eindhoven. His knee injury will force him out for one-to-three months, however that shouldn’t take away from Pepi’s impactful UCL performance.

What did you think of these individual performances this past week? Was there anyone left off the list that you would’ve added?

  1. Isn’t this heart sign thing played out by now? I think the Americans need to take more leadership in goal celebration innovation. We’re way behind.

    • I’m so done with knee slides. E regime does it. Be unique. Dare to be different…
…or be like Marco Tardelli and just run around like a crazy man with no destination in mind. Brian McBride’s fist-pumping happy dance after putting us up 3-0 Portugal gets an honorable mention.
