Johnny Cardoso helped Real Betis to a memorable home win on Saturday.
Cardoso scored his first league goal of the season as Manuel Pellegrini’s squad defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in La Liga play. The American midfielder logged 90 minutes, helping Real Betis spark a comeback on home soil.
Brahim Diaz’s 10th minute goal propelled Carlo Ancelotti’s squad in front 1-0 but Real Betis would fight their way back.
Cardoso’s powerful header off of a corner kick made it 1-1 after 34 minutes. It was the 23-year-old’s second goal of the season and first since December 19.
Isco’s 54th minute penalty kick boosted the hosts in front for a 2-1 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Cardoso won seven duels, completed 83% of his passes, and made five interceptions.
Real Betis jumped into sixth place following the result, which is the final European qualification spot in Spain’s top flight.
Pellegrini’s men resume Conference League play on Thursday against Portuguese club Vitoria de Guimaraes.
Wow….Johnny C really put on a show. Breaking up plays, joining the attack, making the right passes……the kid was switched on this game.
On a team with Antony dos Santos , Cucho Hernández….and on the same field with the likes of Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Luka Modrić…….He scores a GOAL in a game NONE of them can……FOUND SPACE AND ALMOST GOT A SECOND GOAL OFF A FLICK HEADER IN THE 47TH MINUTE IF NOT FOR THE SAVE OF THE WEEK EFFORT BY COURTOIS!!!!! (first half).
Massive achievement…….hope he keeps up this level of play and tenacity. Congrats kid!!!!!
He’s been close a couple times in the last few weeks.
I bet Brazil is bummed he is a USA national. Lol. He has been great at Betis. Going to be hard to leave him out of our starting 11 with his current form.
I mean Brazil’s MF is currently at an arguably historic low but I don’t think their losing a lot of sleep over a guy at Betis with 1g 1a and 0g or a in 18 caps.
2tone,
“I bet Brazil is bummed he is a USA national.”
I’m sure they are. But I think Brazil will find a way to get by without Johnny.
Man you guys are haters. Brazil midfield is trash. Of course Jonny isn’t going to have massive offensive numbers he is 8/6 hybrid c’mon.
2tone I’m just giving you a hard time. It’s special for the US to send players to top 5 leagues. Brazil sends 5-10 to top 5 leagues every window and that’s not counting the dozens they send to second tier leagues like MLS, Saudi, Argentina and Russia that later get sold to top leagues. Their current MF of Guiamares (an 8/6 with 2g 6a in the EPL) and Gerson (he’s back in Brazil but had multiple more productive seasons in France and Italy) would be seen as greats if they played for the US.
“haters”?
I just love how people so casually throw around the word.
Saying Brazil can find someone to replace Johnny before the World Cup is cause for branding someone a hater?
Good for Betis that he is playing well.
When he translates that to the USMNT let me know.
Johnny isn’t even one of our starters.
Right now he is at best Tyler’s backup and he has still to prove, based on what he has done in a USMNT shirt to date, that he’s worthy of that.
Oh no…please help us…more drivel from 2tone.
Don’t you get tired of embarrassing yourself in a public forum?…over and over?…and over, again?
And no, I’m not triggered, I’m just embarrassed for you. I keep drawing attention to your nonsensical comments in an effort to get you to stop, but you can’t help yourself, can you?
Next, your going to say that Pulisic is as good as Vini Jr. Oh wait, you already said that.
Forget it…as you were.
Yyyyyes! Exponential joy squared!
Seeing Johnny do well 🤪 and Real Madrid, not. 😆
