Polvara, Aberdeen down Celtic to earn historic Scottish Cup triumph

Dante Polvara lifted his first trophy at club level on Saturday after Aberdeen pulled a major shock at Hampden Park.

Aberdeen outlasted reigning Scottish Premiership winners Celtic 4-3 on penalty kicks to win the 2024-25 Scottish Cup. It marked the first time that Aberdeen lifted the Scottish Cup since 1990 and also ended Celtic’s hopes of a domestic treble.

Celtic took a 1-0 lead after 39 minutes thanks to Alfie Dorrington’s own goal. Cameron Carter-Vickers headed Nicolas Kuhn’s corner kick towards the net before the ball deflected in off of Dorrington’s arm.

Despite having only 19% possession in the match, Aberdeen equalized in the 83rd minute through Kasper Schmeichel’s own goal.

After neither team could find a winning goal in extra time, spot kicks were needed to determine a winner.

Dimitar Mitov dove to deny Callum McGregor’s effort in the first round before also rejecting Alistair Johnston’s effort in the fifth round.

Polvara, who entered the match in the 79th minute, proceeded to score on his spot kick attempt, sending Schmeichel the opposite direction.

Aberdeen would celebrate its first overall win since April 26 in all competitions.

Carter-Vickers played the full 120 minutes for Celtic while Auston Trusty was an unused substitute in the match.

Both teams will now head into their summer breaks before kicking off the 2025-26 campaign in August.
