Josh Sargent named Norwich City’s Player of the Season

The individual honors continue to pile up for American forward Josh Sargent.

Sargent was named Norwich City’s Player of the Season, as voted by the club’s supporters. The U.S. men’s national team striker was also recently named to the EFL Championship Team of the Season.

“I’m very happy. I’m extremely honoured to have this award,” Sargent said in a club interview Friday. “It’s never easy getting injured like I did this season but I think I’ve done a good job of getting myself in a position where I could hit the ground running when I came back.

“These last two seasons of getting consistent minutes playing as a striker, that’s developed my game and helped me gain more confidence in it..and the goals are flowing now,” he added.

Sargent has scored 15 goals and added five assists in 32 appearances this season, with 11 of those goals coming in the new calendar year.

The Missouri native missed time during the first half of the season through injury, but has since rebounded by delivering his second straight double-digit goalscoring campaign.

Despite Sargent’s best efforts, the Canaries missed out on the promotion playoffs and parted ways with manager Johannes Hoff Thorup. Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is currently serving as interim manager of the club.

  1. “Norwich City concludes its season on Saturday against already-relegated Cardiff City.”

If both Josh and Ethan play Josh gets a chance to score on a USMNT keeper.

I wonder how often that has happened in the Championship?

  2. If he could just stay healthy for a whole season he would be the top goal scorers too. His injury history will have an effect on what teams look at him in the off season.

    • I was thinking the same thing. He had such an awkward injury in the World Cup after stepping on the ball. He seems to continue to have weird leg injuries following. But, it is a nice compliment to be the POY for your team.

Or maybe, it is a bit damning on Norwich that the POY is a guy who was injured for some games. Lets concentrate on the good: congrats to our USMNT player.

      • USMNT fans notice injuries to our players because we have so few.

I have NOT done the research but I doubt Josh is out of the ordinary for a striker who plays in the Championship, arguably one of the most brutal divisions in football.

    • I’m wondering to myself how many USMNT players have gone through the last two seasons without long or multiple injury layoffs. And then extend that to pretty much any team in any league. The schedule these guys play is not conducive to staying healthy.

      • In Josh’s case as Norwich’s primary threat for a while now, he is a marked man

I’m sure he gets more than his fair share of “attention”, the kind that is not beneficial to his health.

      • People seem to have forgotten how often Pulisic was injured before this season. And this year both Pepi and Balogun have missed most of the season.

      • MotO,

Maybe not in the last two years but if you look closely, the majority of this group USMNT players who play regularly in Europe have broken down and missed significant time through injury:

CP, Weah , BA, Richards, Weston, Reyna, Tyler, Josh, Wright, Dest, Jedi

I don’t think the USMNT is exceptional in this regard.
In the “good old days”, we used to not get so many injuries because a lot of our guys didn’t get to play that much.

We notice it because has we have no depth.

The answer? Probably another 5-10 EPL/ Champions League level players emerging would do it.
