The U.S. men’s national team’s three-match summer window got underway in winning fashion.
Emma Hayes’ squad blanked the visiting Republic of Ireland 4-0 on Thursday thanks to four different players finding the back of the net. Avery Patterson and Sam Coffey doubled the USWNT’s lead before halftime ahead of insurance finishes from returnee Rose Lavelle and young attacker Alyssa Thompson.
It was a fast start for the Americans, who grabbed a 1-0 lead after 18 minutes. Lavelle delivered a cross into the box which was headed home by Patterson.
Coffey doubled the USWNT’s lead in first-half stoppage time, slotting home her second goal in consecutive international windows.
Lavelle marked her return with a clinical finish in the 53rd minute, making it 3-0 to the USWNT. It was the veteran midfielder’s first goal for her country since 2023.
Thompson had the final say in the scoreline, finishing off Lilly Reale’s pass after the hour mark.
Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey didn’t need to make a single save to register her clean sheet. Jordyn Bugg, Olivia Moultrie, and Yazmeen Ryan were among the six players to feature off of the bench while Chelsea defender Naomi Girma got the start as the only European-based club player in camp.
The USWNT’s busy window continues on Sunday against the Republic of Ireland at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Ireland was so bad, I think we see why they didn’t qualify for Womens Euro next week.
Perfect opponent for essentially a tryout for a number of players. Prop’s to Ireland for playing positive and not being overly aggressive. Still the USWNT looked sharp moving the ball quickly on the ground foot to foot. Thompson’s tenaciousness shines with top level speed, she still needs to finish better! Patterson looked really good and should push into the first squad. Fantastic seeing Rose Lavelle finding open spaces and getting the ball.
Overall Ireland talent is just not that good and the US has a lot of talent and competition at every position. Massive praise to Hayes for creating depth through giving opportunities
I assume with nothing to play for this summer Ireland was trying out some new players too.
Ireland was bad and without their two best players due to injury but what is most impressive is how Hayes gets a bunch of players who haven never played together before to play as a team against an opponent where it would be so easy for individuals to try to use the relative weakness of the opponent to highlight themselves to the coach. Instead the team put together 3 really great team goals – the exception the A Thompson insanity.
That’s the sign of a world class coach.
MotO, indeed, World Class Coach
USMNT need a player that takes people on 1v1 l8ke Alyssa Thompson. That was nice and entertaining to see from her.
The dispossession, run and curling shot were amazing. Agreed wish the MNT had a player with that kind of swagger to make that run and then not pass back but take a chance from distance.
Alyssa will be difficult to keep off the field with Rodman, Wilson and Swanson. if all healthy, dynamite group that will take it to anyone. still settling on the GK1 and a CB pairing with Girma
