Liam Manning on Josh Sargent’s future: “We have to see how that pans out”

Josh Sargent remains a Norwich City player for now, but could very well be in different colors back August.

Sargent continues to garner plenty of interest throughout England ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign. The U.S. men’s national team forward played 45 minutes in Liam Manning’s squad on Saturday as the Canaries defeated lower-league Northampton Town 3-1 in friendly play.

Despite Wolfsburg, Leeds United, and Burnley reportedly being in the mix for Sargent’s services, the American has continued through preseason motions with Norwich City this summer. Sargent led the Canaries with 15 goals last season, continuing what has been a positive spell for him at Carrow Road.

Manning, who only recently joined as manager earlier this summer, praised Sargent’s talents but also admitted that Norwich City may have to prepare for life without him this season.

“Josh is a top player, right? You see that,” Manning said in an interview transcribed by Pink UN. “You see what he’s done in the division. But the consequences of that, naturally, are you’re going to be linked with clubs at a higher level. We have to see how that pans out. I can’t speak highly enough of how he’s applied himself in training and how he’s gone about it. It was good to see him get 45 as well.”

Norwich City has already seen star playmaker Borja Sainz depart this weekend for Portuguese giants FC Porto and could now be down two attacking leaders before its EFL Championship opener on August 9.

The Canaries will host Millwall at Carrow Road to kick off their competitive schedule.

    Ricardo Pepi
22-23 12 goals (on loan at Groningen)
    23-24 7 goals
    24-25 11goals

……..coming off the bench BEHIND De Jong. Impressive and that why even after a 29 goal and 14 goal seasons, back-to-back, Pepi has been given the No# 9 jersey.

It’s good to remember that PSV are first, last and always a selling club.

……..coming off the bench BEHIND De Jong. ”

Yeah. The more goals Ricardo scores the better. Coming on when the games were already over. Often against the worst teams in the league. PSV have been very carefully managing his minutes.

“Impressive and that why even after a 29 goal and 14 goal seasons, back-to-back, Pepi has been given the No# 9 jersey.”

de Jong is 34. This succession was on the cards from day one. Smart teams get rid of you one year too early instead of one year too late. If you’re PSV you set up Ricardo so that he goes into the WC as ready as possible to have a great World Cup. If that happens his current market value is 16 million and he can easily double that.

      Follow the money.

  2. Sargent is not a “play maker” and like most US forwards cannot create his own opportunities out of nothing……he’s more like a finisher. “Break the lines, create space and THEN pass him the ball to finish”. That’s it. If you put him on a team that doesn’t have midfield players with a good understanding of the game or can find him an open space, he is “dead in the water”.
    Wolfsburg is definitely not it.

How many forwards , from anywhere, are there who can, on any kind if consistent basis create his own opportunities out of nothing?

      • bizzy,

I asked for “forwards , from anywhere, are there who can, on any kind if consistent basis create his own opportunities out of nothing?”

You answered by listing players who are great “in terms of exceptional goal-scoring ability, finishing, movement, and overall contribution to their teams”

        That is two different things.

CR7 for example, did all the fancy stepovers and dribbling through the other team when he first came up with Manchester United. He was with them for six seasons and in his first three did not break double figures in goals. Then he cut out the fancy stuff and hit double figures in his last three seasons. And he continued his upward trajectory with Real Madrid.
In other words he stopped trying to do everything by himself and just took advantage of what was there.

There’s really only one guy currently, who creates goals out of nothing on a consistent basis and I don’t need to name him.

      • Vacqui,
maybe you jumped in before you understood my comment:
““like most US forwards cannot create his own opportunities out of nothing”
        you said:
“How many forwards, from anywhere, are there who can, on any kind if consistent basis create his own opportunities out of nothing?”
        The answer is:
THEY ALL DO. THATS WHY THEY ARE IN THE TOP 20 STRIKERS IN THE WORLD.
They have the ability to single handedly turn the game around with exceptional individual brilliance HENCE the “exceptional goal-scoring ability, finishing, movement, and overall contribution to their teams”.
What about that don’t you understand???

      • Also Vacqui,
“CR7 for example, did all the fancy stepovers and dribbling through the other team when he first came up with Manchester United”
WORST EXAMPLE because the fancy footwork stopped because of AGE not because any coach had the audacity to say they didn’t want that kind of play on their team. That fancy stepovers gave him:

        Individual Awards
Ballon d’Or: Ronaldo has won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award five times (2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017), recognizing him as the best player in the world.
UEFA Men’s Player of the Year: He has received this award three times, showcasing his impact in European competitions.
European Golden Shoe: Ronaldo has won this award four times, given to the top goal scorer in European leagues.
        Team Trophies
        Club Achievements:
Manchester United: 3 Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup, 2 Football League Cups, 1 UEFA Champions League, 1 FIFA Club World Cup.
Real Madrid: 2 La Liga titles, 2 Copa del Rey titles, 4 UEFA Champions League titles, 3 UEFA Super Cups, 3 FIFA Club World Cups.
Juventus: 2 Serie A titles, 1 Coppa Italia, 1 Supercoppa Italiana.
Al Nassr: 1 Arab Club Champions Cup.
        International Achievements:
Portugal National Team: Winner of the UEFA European Championship (2016) and the UEFA Nations League (2019). He is also the all-time leading scorer for Portugal, with over 130 goals.
        Records and Milestones
All-Time Leading Goal Scorer: Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals scored in UEFA Champions League history (140 goals) and is the all-time top scorer in international men’s football.
Career Goals: He has surpassed 900 official senior career goals, making him one of the highest goal scorers in football history.
International Appearances: Ronaldo has made over 200 appearances for the Portugal national team, contributing significantly to their successes.

……Just incase you forgot he is one of the greatest BECAUSE OF ALL THE FANCY FOOTWORK lol.

      • bizzy,

“What about that don’t you understand???”

I could ask you the same question.

        You said this about Josh:

““like most US forwards cannot create his own opportunities out of nothing”

Most forwards in the game in Europe, South America, anywhere, cannot create their own opportunities out of nothing.

        A. They need help from their team.
        Or
        B. They need the opponents to make a mistake

It is a TEAM game. So I asked you for a player who CONSISTENTLY can “create his own opportunities out of nothing?“ because I am tired of people who don’t get that soccer it is a team game.

Josh gets decent service at Norwich; At Werder Bremen he was playing for a fucking freak show, just like Jozy was playing for the fucking Circus at Sunderland. Sunderland, where careers go to die.
Name me a player creates his own opportunities w/o the HELP OF HIS TEAM.

If you are talking creating your own opportunities that means the team gives you the ball at the halfway line and then stays out of the way and watches you score. I’m not sure he can still do that but if anyone currently can do that, it’s Leo.
No through balls. no crosses, no opponent’s bad backpass, no using a teamate as a wall. Just you vs. the defense.

The guys you listed? At the senior level they need less help than most but they don’t do it alone.

Leo, Maradona, George Weah, George Best, I’ve seen them dribble through the defense and score but it did not happen a lot. It is something of a trick question because very few players have ever been able to do that even once, and no one would be allowed to do it on any kind of consistent basis today. Yamal or Musiala have the ability but try and do it in today’s game on a consistent basis and they will break your legs. Look at Musiala. He’ll never be the same.

Many of the guys you listed play on teams where they get better service than Josh ever sees especially when he plays for the USMNT. No one gets good service playing for the USMNT. That’s why I like Dempsey and Ricardo. They are really good at punishing mistakes.

“THEY ALL DO.

So just to be clear, the guys you listed? Great players. But they all live off of CHANCES. And chances are created by SERVICE from their teammates or from opponent’s mistakes. They don’t come out of nothing.

        CR7

“WORST EXAMPLE because the fancy footwork stopped because of AGE not because any coach had the audacity to say they didn’t want that kind of play on their team. That fancy stepovers gave him:”

I don’t see how you can say that unless you lived in the Man U. locker room for all of CR7’s tenure. He was about 18 when he joined Man U. All that fancy foot work pissed of his opponents and his teammates, notably Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Worse it also slows down the movement of the ball. And in England it eventually gets you brutalized. SAF used to order Rio and Keane to be extra tough on CR7 in practice to make that point.

Personal maturity always helps and far be it from me to question SAF and his methods but his goal totals started to rise when RVN left for Real Madrid as CR7 hit about 21 years old. The fancy footwork just slows things down and when you have Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney as your attacking partners, they don’t want to wait around while you undress some poor defender. He toned that down and started to focus more directly on scoring.
The fancy footwork did not get him all the awards you mentioned. Ronaldinho was fancier.
CR7 has those awards because he is extremely intelligent and dedicated and figured out a long time ago how to be as efficient as possible with everything he has. He doesn’t waste time anymore with the fancy stuff if he doesn’t need it. That’s why he has the number to say that he is arguably the greatest scorer of all time.

  3. -PSV have given Pepi the #9 jersey number. It appears they are not going to resign de Jong, and Ricardo will be the main man in Eindhoven.

      • Intentionally or not, is presence on the team alone fucked over Pepi, who is CURRENTLY a better forward than A 34 YEAR OLD Luuk De Jong…….

PSV stuck with him out of loyalty only

      • bizzy,

“PSV stuck with him out of loyalty only”
        Really?
When it comes to football I notice the Dutch are pretty cold blooded. My personal experience is that they’ll fuck you over in a heartbeat, but in a nice way, if that is what is necessary.

But you must know so I’m sure PSV kept DeJong around just for shits and giggles.

        Luuk DeJong
        22-23 14 league goals
        23-24 29 league goals
        24-25 14 league goals

        Ricardo Pepi
22-23 12 goals (on loan at Groningen)
        23-24 7 goals
        24-25 11goals

And these are just league goals. Maybe De Jong has earned his “loyalty”?

Where I’m from it looks like he’s scored more league goals than Ricardo and was pretty handy to have around when Ricardo got hurt.

Also I wonder if maybe De Jong is why Pepi is not a softy, entitled country club American who thinks the world owes him a fucking living.
Maybe Luuk forcing Ricardo to earn every fucking minute has actually been a good thing for Ricardo?

Pepi is undoubtedly the future but is it possible he still learned a lot from De Jong , which is what Earnie said he wanted to happen when he signed Pepi? The numbers don’t lie.

    • I’d much rather see him at a solid B1 club than trying to beat relegation in the Prem…again. It’s hard for players at the foot of the table to look good, and every week is a grind against teams that outgun you. And the English press will pounce on you mercilessly if you stumble…especially if you’re American. I’d personally avoid England if there were options, and certainly with a relegation bait team.

  4. He was bought for 8 million pounds. Norwich wants 20 million pounds. Transfermarkt has his value around 16 million pounds. I could see why any team would be hesitant to pay 20 million pounds with his injury history.

  5. 27 million USD seems a little high, but then only bought him for around 10. 48 goals over 4 seasons and a double your money. Not bad if you can get it. Apparently Burnley and Leeds were not very excited by that number though.

    • If you’re Josh he probably wants to go where he has a great shot at being the full time #9 and is likely to get some decent service.

I’m not sure Burnley or Leeds fit that bill.

      • Well Wolfsburg just sent one of their CFs to Leeds. Nmecha (brother of the Dortmund MF) has been hurt most of the last three seasons but he did have more Bundesliga minutes than Gio. They signed Amoura after having him on loan last year, and they have two other strikers still from last year. They use all three of them as CF and wings when necessary and play two strikers sometimes. Although they have a new manager that played a 4-3-3 mostly, last year.
        —————-
Burnley have their starter from last year that had 12g 4a in Championship. Their guy from 2 years ago is supposedly coming back. It sounds like he did his ACL in training, but there is no official word. So I wouldn’t be surprised if their interest picks back up in the next 24-48 hours.
        ———————-
Leeds at least he has Farke who he played for but he did play him as a wing. I think they’d stick with Piroe than Josh at that price. Their only attacking addition so far is Nmecha and he was a free transfer so I think they’ll add someone.
