Reports: Josh Sargent’s proposed Wolfsburg move falls through

Josh Sargent’s proposed move back to the German Bundesliga has reportedly fallen through.

Sargent has rejected the opportunity to join Wolfsburg, Sky Sports and The Athletic reported Wednesday. Wolfsburg reportedly paid €19 million to Norwich City for the American forward, but Sargent declined the move, according to the reports.

Sargent entered the summer on multiple clubs’ radars including Leeds United, AS Roma, and Burnley. Wolfsburg entered the race earlier in the summer transfer window and looked to have jumped in front of the others clubs for Sargent’s signature.

However, Sargent’s recent rejection of a move to Wolfsburg puts him back at square one this summer.

The Missouri native recorded double-digit goals in each of the last three seasons, totaling 44 over that span. Sargent has contributed 48 goals in Norwich City colors since joining the club in 2021 from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.

He’s earned 28 caps to date with the U.S. men’s national team, but only has five goals over that span.

Norwich City opens its EFL Championship schedule on August 9 against Millwall.

  1. I guess he thinks he can get a better deal elsewhere and would probably prefer to stay in England. I hope he lands on a team in the Premier League. He doesn’t have much left to prove by staying in the Championship.

    • Those were initial, pretty solid now it was Josh. Sounds like it was based on not wanting to move the family to Germany.

      • I’m really not worried by it. Freese, Schulte, and Steffen should be the GK’s moving forward. All three are more than capable. Schulte could very well have two MLS cups by the end of this season.
