Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Richards, Dest, and more

Crystal Palace’s English Premier League campaign got underway on Sunday at Stamford Bridge with Chris Richards helping the Eagles to a road point.

Richards played the full 90 minutes in Crystal Palace’s 0-0 draw with London rivals Chelsea. The U.S. men’s national team defender was a rock in Oliver Glasner’s backline, completed 90% of his passes, winning all five of his individual duels, and completed both of his tackle attempts.

Richards, 25, has continued to be a key starter for the Eagles after helping them knock off Liverpool in last weekend’s FA Community Shield. Now with Marc Guehi set to depart the club in the coming days, Richards could see an even larger role for the bulk of the current season.

Crystal Palace will now turn its attention to the start of a two-legged playoff series with Fredrikstad on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League.

In England, Tyler Adams started in Bournemouth’s loss to Liverpool. Josh Sargent and Haji Wright both scored in EFL Championship play on Saturday. Lynden Gooch scored in Huddersfield Town’s road loss to Blackpool.

In Germany, James Sands and St. Pauli advanced in DFB Pokal action. Joe Scally also featured for Borussia Moenchengladbach. Paxten Aaronson scored his first goal for Eintracht Frankfurt while John Tolkin delivered the winner for Holstein Kiel.

In Italy, Gianluca Busio and Venezia advanced in the Coppa Italia competition. Christian Pulisic scored his first goal of the season as AC Milan also advanced.

In France, Tim Weah made his Marseille debut in a season-opening loss to Rennes. Mark McKenzie and Toulouse downed Nice away from home.

In the Netherlands, Sergino Dest shined in PSV’s road victory over FC Twente.

Elsewhere, Auston Trusty made his first start of the season in Celtic’s League Cup win over Falkirk. Bryan Reynolds and Griffin Yow both started in Westerlo’s road loss to Cercle Brugge. Alex Zendejas went the distance in Club America’s road win over Tigres. George Bello and LASK defeated Austria Vienna at home. Donovan Pines started in Grazer’s draw with WSG Tirol.

  1. Dest was named “Star of the Match” but it does appear to be a fan vote.
    —————
Plea suffered a serious knee injury and will be out through at least January according to reports so Pepi should have no problem getting minutes once his knee is fully recovered.

  2. Dortmund may be downright impossible to watch this season. Kovac started 5 defenders and 3 DM against a mid table 3rd Division squad. The strategy seemed to be defend and hope Guirrassey does something special, which he did.

  3. I thought George Campbell looked good ball at his feet and defending for WBA against Wrexham.

I thought Auston Trusty, playing for a generally dominant Celtic, looked like a cup game weak point against……Falkirk? Hasn’t been playing in league.

That’s the opposite of how the fanboys would sort it but he got to WBA somehow. Bodied up, anticipated plays, and he really looked fine ball at feet. WBA knocks it around the back.

    • As I told you George is known for being better with his feet. Not sure using Wrexham as your signpost for anything at this point though. The roster is largely journeyman many past their prime. Trusty is living off his Arsenal transfer and being the least terrible of Sheff. United’s epically bad back 3. He’ll play more once Celtic is in CL play and playing 2 matches a week. SPL is so bad at lower end that I’m not sure that helps much.

  4. Johnnyrazor,

“Free Cavan” is premature and hyperbolic. There is plenty of that around here from others…surprising to see that from you.

The kid is 15, barely has any fuzz on his peanuts, and you want him “freed?” Why?…cause he went to Man City, had a two week training stint, and scored in a u21 game?

Philly is sitting in 2nd place in the East and doing well with the lineups that Carnell puts out, so why would he change?…just for the sake of “freeing Cavan?”

Did you see him play vs Nashville?…he was average, at best.

If at this time Cavan were better, or offered more than the other players, Carnell would give him more minutes. Otherwise, he will have to earn his minutes like any other professional, especially with a Manager like Carnell.

Also, when asked about Cavan, Carnell answered positively. What else would you expect him to say to the media?

    Reply
    • It’s only plus in his development is it’s close to his house. Tanner and his devotion to the Red Bull way doesn’t fit with Cavan’s abilities especially as a 15 yr old. Philly’s already gotten its money from Cavan they have no desire to play him and help him develop. Saturday Carnell put Chris Donovan, a striker at one wide midfield position 1g in his last 40 MLS matches, and 38 yr old Bedoya. On their third match in 8 days and without Vassilev. If you’re not playing him over Chris Donovan you don’t care about winning either you just care about yourselves. Which is fine, but don’t act like you want what’s best for Sullivan. I won’t be a bit surprised either if after not playing him all year that they claim they can’t release him for the U17 WC because they need him.

    • i think the best of the emerging set of USYNT kids are campbell, c. sullivan, and adams the kid from the crew.

i think albert cannot separate even at youth level and is overrated. he has a couple moves. if they work he can’t put room between him and even a U19. which will not scale up. figueroa looks raw.

i think campbell is senior ready. that is our stupid club form politics.

sullivan IMO is caught in a very dumb trap at the union right now, akin to what campbell was enduring. they have him dressing with I, not playing much, then not out with II.

adams needs some youth work But That Finishing.

re sullivan the Freaking Duh immediate solution is either leave him at II or have him play the II game if a good week is 5 freaking minutes of field time.

medium term all 3 should be asked after for U20. that gets sullivan out of the union silliness for a month, fitness, games, and a showcase.

longer term if the union aren’t going to play him II anymore but are going to rot him I, get him out of there. demand a transfer.

should it be city? meh. i think they’d teach him well then sit him for senior ball. just like dortmund’s doing. i am more a fan of the haaland approach. sign modest. dominate. climb a rung. dominate. keep climbing. and you can eventually land at city but throwing around adult resume as opposed to fighting your way off U21.

      • I misunderstood the deal Union still own his rights until he turns 18, when he transfers to Man City. I thought Man City had bought Cavan and loaned him back to Union until he could move to Europe. With Carnell fully implementing the Red Bull pressing and immediately whacking it forward when you win it, it doesn’t fit a teenager with elite ball skills. I’m not sure if Man City has any ability to get him loaned elsewhere or if MLS could even allow a transfer of a player under 18? The details of the deal were never released so I’m not sure if the price is set, if it is why play him.
        ——————————
Adams did really well against US Virgin Islands, but against Cuba just looked slightly above average. He’s been ok in MLS Next Pro this season I’ve watched a few Crew II matches. As a striker he probably gets more time to develop you aren’t expecting your striker to be ready for national team at 19.
        ——————————-
Alexander Staff is the highest rated ‘08 striker but he’s been playing for Germany so we’ll see if we ever get a shot at him. Jude Terry is pretty well rated as a CM but hasn’t played for LAFC yet. Birchimas played up with the U20s last year but has been hurt most of time since. Chris Cupps and Ian James already have MLS starts. Jamir Johnson is training with PSV. All of those guys are rated above Chase, but honestly ranking 17 yr olds is pretty inexact science.
        ——————-
I don’t know about Albert, he’s already playing and producing at U19 Bundesliga level at a younger age than Pulisic, Campbell, or Reyna. Gio, Cole, and Christian only ever had to play the clubs in their region which were mostly minnows now the second half the season is basically all Bundesliga academies. Mathis’s numbers are pretty similar per match in the Junior A’s to Campbell who was 18 to Albert’s 16. Again rating high school aged kids is an inexact science. Hopefully they all turn out but that doesn’t happen even in Argentina or France.
        ————————
Keyrol hasn’t seemed to have progressed in two years. I heard a breakdown from a Liverpool fan “he’s hurt, then goes with NT, then plays a match or two gets hurt and starts all over again” he’s never played enough matches in a row to get comfortable.

    • Papi: I’ll eat some humble pie, I thought Man City already owned Sullivan. Apparently Union still own his rights until he’s 18. Couldn’t find anywhere details of payment amount and when it takes place.

  5. Time to start the “Free Cavan” movement. Gets his first start July 5, he’s played 4 mins since. Meanwhile Julian Hall has five starts for Red Bulls, Peyton Miller is a regular for New England. El Tri is gloating about 16 yr old Gilberto Mora who has 4g since returning from the GC. Carnel raved about how much better Cavan looked after returning from 2 weeks in Manchester, but can’t give him more than stoppage minutes. Man City has to be wanting out of this loan deal, send him to San Diego or Columbus instead of this Red Bulls style Tanner and Carnel love.
