Josh Sargent could still be on the move before the close of the Summer Transfer Window, but he wasted little time in scoring his first goal of the 2025-26 season.
Sargent scored Norwich City’s first goal of the season on Saturday in a 2-1 EFL Championship loss to Millwall at Carrow Road. The U.S. men’s national team forward also captained the side in Liam Manning’s first match as new manager of the club.
Following a goal-less first half, Millwall broke the deadlock in the 51st minute through Camiel Neghli’s finish. However, the lead would only last four minutes as the Canaries battled their way back through Sargent’s diligent work in the final third.
Milwall goalkeeper Steven Benda did not rush to clear a back pass in his 18-yard box, allowing Sargent to block the clearance. The deflection flew behind Benda and into an empty net, giving Norwich City a lifeline.
It marked Sargent’s 49th-career goal for Norwich City, tying him for sixth place on the club’s all-time goalscoring ranks.
Despite valiant work from both teams to find a winning goal, Millwall came up clutch in the final minutes. Substitute Macaulay Langstaff came off the bench and slid home the winner with eight minutes of regular time to play.
Norwich City would succumb to its first loss of the new campaign, putting early pressure on the club. Sargent played the full 90 minutes in the match, in what could be one of his final appearances for the club.
The Canaries will next travel to Watford in EFL Cup play on Tuesday.
No Reyna for Dortmund today, Campbell on the bench. Read into that what you will.
Nothing to read into this…it is crystal clear. The pissing contest continues.
Word from preseason camp in Austria was that Gio was, “going through the motions and trying not to get hurt.”
Gio will 100% be out of Dortmund before this window closes and the transfer price will be closer to Parma’s offer, than Dortmund’s number. At this point, Gio and Parma have leverage. Gio’s contract is up at the end of this coming season. If Dortmund doesn’t move him before the close of this window, they see $9.5M USD evaporate right before their very eyes.
It’s good that Sargent pressed the keeper and that it resulted in a goal, albeit fortuitous, but unfortunately, he did nothing else the rest of the game. He will need to do a lot more…especially tactically, both in possession and out of possession…in order to make the 26 man roster for the 2026 WC.
On a side note, Haji Wright subbed on at the 67th and played centrally for Coventry City and he did nothing. His first touch was severely deficient.
Dest with a goal for a second consecutive week. Pepi not in the 18.
Pepi was left out for fitness reasons but is expected to be back next week. They need him. Despite the team scoring six goals the CF – Plea – was nearly invisible.
Good pressing. Needs a big year to convince Poch.
That’s the sort of goal that will endear him to Pochettino. Poch really, really likes his forwards to press hard and Sargent went in like he’d been shot from a cannon…and this was minute 52.
He keeps that up, he’ll make the ’26 squad.
